Why the **** do residents get to claim a standard deduction of 5000$ while I have to itemise my deductions
I didn't think anyone HAS to itemize. Maybe you're doing something you don't have to.

I didnt think anyone had to itemize either. perhaps the 1040 a form would be of more help then the 1040ez form. the tax forms are reallynot that hard to figure out if you know what is on them and what you are doing. i do mine and the hubbies every year. We have no big stuff that needs to be reported and for this year we are getting back a big 7000.00
but then agan we have kids and dont file together.
for the question at hand as was said it depends how much was taken out for taxes during the year or time worked. But i thought tht being able to be claimed by the folks reduces the students refund. due to they willnot give both ur folks and u the deduction for you twice
When you find yourself arguing with an idiot, you might want to rethink who the idiot really is.

My guess would be that many/most students probably get all their taxes back because they probably only work part time and don't make enough to get taxed.

Certain individuals are not entitled to the standard deduction. They are:

              1. A married individual filing a separate return whose spouse itemizes deductions,
              2. An individual who was a nonresident alien or dual status alien during any part of the year, or
              3. An individual who files a return for a period of less than 12 months due to a change in his or her annual accounting cycle.

So KH, how are you a nonresident alien? (Just curious.)

It seems amazingly simple for someone to be considered a resident alien ... either you have a green card or are here by some other legal means allowing you to work, or you live here for THIRTY ONE DAYS this year and 183 in the past 3 years.

So i'm curious why you have to pay taxes here but weren't here legally? Or are you commuting to baltimore?

                    From your link:

Exempt individual. Do not count days for which you are an exempt individual. The term “exempt individual” does not refer to someone exempt from U.S. tax, but to anyone in the following categories.

                    *

An individual temporarily present in the United States as a foreign government-related individual.
                    *

A teacher or trainee temporarily present in the United States under a “J” or “Q” visa, who substantially complies with the requirements of the visa.
                    *

A student temporarily present in the United States under an “F,” “J,” “M,” or “Q” visa, who substantially complies with the requirements of the visa.
                    *

A professional athlete temporarily in the United States to compete in a charitable sports event.

Do you get to vote, or are you being taxed without representation?

I wouldnt think it be that hard to itemize to the standard deduction 5000. when you can claim gambling losses, charitable donations and stuff like that. i think you can even claim items like pens paper and stuff to do ur work or stuff that you pay for. Icludin the use of computers and xerox machines. This way, itemiziing is just more of a painin the ass the anything

You can claim gambling losses? Surely only against winnings?

sure you can up to a certain amount.
the winnigs are supposed to be reported that way the income can be taxed. and if its not a large amount i dont think most folks claim the winnings. I have won like 500 bucks inthe lottery and never claimed it on taxes. but i guess it goes to sayif you cant prove i won it i dont report it

I think most state lottery winnings are non-taxable.
