        Diamonds, sure.

I can't say much about gemstones, but I've always been of the mindset that one shouldn't go with perceived rarity, but actual rarity--orchids, for instance, instead of roses.

Columbian Emeralds, for instance, are actually more rare than Diamonds.

Just what we need, another reason to look for tall blond swedish girls to go out with.

I brought my wife along to a wholesaler to choose the stone and then had a specialist mount it in one of those tandem designed interweaving engagement/wedding combinations.
I told the dealer what price range I was looking in and of course she pushed the limit a bit. She set out a selection to look at and (what a surprise) my wife was able to spot the most expensive one out of the bunch. It was over the range I had specified but once the wife decided it was the one she liked best, what could I do.
I don't regret it now many years later because she's always loved the ring, but I did end up paying more than I had planned. It was a 1 caret high quality stone.
yeah see if it was me that would have been the end

A little update She said yes. The ring is a .55 carat princess cut diamond, fully certified, with a white gold band. I went to the family jeweler to have it made, which was actually a little bit cheaper than a chain store.

I popped the question at the Botanical Gardens here in Cleveland, up on the walkway part near the tree canopy in the Costa Rica room. It was pretty freakin' awesome.

The wedding will be next year, in May. We're seeing the priest tomorrow about Pre-Cana and booking the church. Dad is thankfully picking up the tab for the alcohol. We'll be paying for the rest of the wedding so if anyone knows a cheap photographer who lives in Northeast Ohio let me know.

I had a friend who got his engagement ring in a Ghetto Mall.

CONGRATS. Pre-Cana was a laugh for us. We were in our 30's and had lived together for a few years already. Most of the other couples would in their low 20's. On the last day, we got so bored we went home to watch the bears game. The priest didn't have any problems with it.

A big thumbs up for getting out only having to pop for a .55 carat diamond.

Thanks Rah. She never wanted a large ring anyways, plus she was well aware what the wedding would cost. She said she would have married me without a ring anyways.

Pre-Cana will be an easy trip for us too. We've been living together for a year now and can't be happier. We're both pretty much alike and think the same way so no real arguments. Plus our likable priest is a mere 10 - 14 years older and new to the collar too. We shouldn't have any problems.

1/4 - 1/3 carat. Styles vary because of tastes. She'll wear it, let her choose it.

Thanks Shelly. We looked at rings together just so I knew what she liked. After that I just figured it out.
