To answer Thorn's questions: There is a microscopic increase in the chance of an explosiion.

The theory is that pumping gas increases the amount of gasoline fumes. If your engine in running, the spark plugs are sparking. If the fumes come in contact with the sparking sparkplugs, KABOOM!

Yeah. To be noted, however, is the fact that the lower limit on the concentration of gasoline which forms an explosive mixture with air is 1.4%, which is very high.

We'd have to define "dictatorship"... And was f.e. Elisabeth the Great any better? She was a ruthless catholic blood-sucking monster. Yet she was a great ruler. I believe in western-like democracy, but don't feel a need to force it everywhere at once.

My impression about the OP is that it is very unlikely for the car engine to cause any sort of explosion; liquid gasoline is not easily combustible without being vaporized first (usually by heat, of course...) so you'd basically have to spray the gas onto your engine to have any problem. Simply refueling normally is entirely safe, as your gas tank is several feet away from your engine.

Not that I'd recommend it, as if you DID manage to get sprayed by a bunch of gasoline in the engine area, you might indeed have some trouble. But I think the trouble is vastly overhyped.

If simply driving in an area that was pumping gas caused explosions ... well, you'd never make it out of the gas station alive. I'm not sure about that 1.4% ratio, but I have to doubt its veracity... that would make being in a gas station unsafe. And certainly fueling doesn't significantly change the pressure of the gasoline inside the vehicle - it's pressurized anyway once it enters the engine. Liquids never significantly increase in pressure in the volumes you're talking about - for gasoline, the relevant pressure is in gaseous form.

If you were in an atmosphere that contained a 1.4% proportion of gasoline you would die very quickly, and not from an explosion either...

                  Google "lower explosive limit gasoline"...

you are going to have to show me proof like Fez did.

although since I think you are the same person as Fez, that probably isn't necessary.
