But a lot of people would beat the hell out of their daughter if they found out she had or was seeking an abortion. It's not anywhere near the same as having a kidney problem.

No one is as removed from primative instincts like violence as they like to believe they are.
Lots of parents would beat the crap out of their kids for buying a gun, or getting a tattoo. Does that mean that the many states that ban gun ownership by minors or require parental consent before a minor gets a tattoo are doing something wrong? I think not. I don't see how this is any different.

There is no health concern that youth have guns or tattoos. Besides, if they don't get the tat, big fat deal, but if a young girl doesn't get an abortion she will probably end up having a baby. Which will probably get her beaten if her parents are of the violent type that would've abused her for seeking an abortion anyway.

Abortion isn't something you can compare to other things. It is its own issue with its own ins and outs. No one considers it a normal surgical procedure because it isn't. If you try to normalize it to the average voter, you will fail.

Joseph I hate to use your post for an example but even with the boy, if the case wasn't rape and your daughter consented to unprotected sex, why would the boy be less morally at fault than your daughter?

In an ideal world I would have no problem with parental consent. The problem is that "pro-life"/anti-choice/forced birth ( ) people are using this to force religious views on thier teenage daughters.

Why are abortions somehow special compared to other medical procedures that require some form of parental consent especially with a judicial way to bypass the parents if needed?

Actually, as I understand it, abortion has been normalized in pretty much every other western democracy -- which is why there's nothing like the crazed US debate in places like Canada, the UK, and Sweden.

As for the violent parent argument -- violent parents are violent parents. I don't think non-violent parents are going to be driven to violence over this one issue, and I think parents who would be driven to violence over this issue would be driven to violence over any number of things (a tattoo, a boyfriend of a different race, drug use, wrecking the family car, etc.). It's certainly no basis for setting social policy.

Yeah, right. teens are going to have sex whether parents like it or not, and if you don't think they are I have a nice bridge to sell ya.

Abortions, like any other medical procedure, should require parental consent <18. Any other argument is just politics. (Or Ozzy, but he's allowed his ... opinions.)

It's not Joseph's responsibility, it's the boy's father, to discipline the boy. He'd only need to yell at him if he tried to get in the way...

For some part you're right, violent parents will just be that way regardless, but I believe we are definitely preventing abuse with laws that allow needing teens to bypass the parents' right to know.

Understandably, it's a subject that is difficult to gather data on, and I doubt enough exists to mine anything for statistics. But given what we're talking about here I would gladly err in favor of caution to protect youth.
