  • Paintings That Remind You Of Home- Or Where You Live

I was pondering on this the other day.

At the Degas/Lautrec/Sickert exhibition in town there's some of Sickert's celebrated paintings of domestic interiors and the music hall and cabaret scenes and bar scenes created by all three artists.

So I set to wondering what images (painted or drawn or photographs) remind you of 'home' or where you're living now ?

There's a Victorian artist called Atkinson Grimshaw (suitably 'Oop North' sounding name) whose paintings remind me of London, Manchester and Melbourne, probably because he painted dockside scenes and winter scenes, with Victorian merchants' buildings and wharves in them.

This one is actually called 'Canny Glasgow' but reminds me very much of older parts of Docklands in the East End:

I lived here once. The painting (by Albert Fenger-Krog) is from 1900, so the place is totally different now. As in, a lot more buildings. Even the hills in the background are dotted with houses. The tram is still there

      That's a nice painting, Molly.

I surfed through the Canadian National Archives but didn't manage to find any paintings from around here that had a lot of snow in them.

I did find this one, though, and it struck me as a good illustration of how young this country is.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

I felt sure you might go for a Brueghel, Bosch, Delvaux or Magritte.

This is a painting by Nicolas de Stael, which always reminds me of the view of slate grey rooftops in winter, especially from a tall building.

                It's entitled simply: Les Toits
