Thankfully I have never owned a Korean car. I have driven Korean cars on two occasions and that was more then enough to last me a life time.

From what I've been told (from a friend who has the same car), that's not the case.

The Saab 9-5 that he has (from 2000), has Saab B235 engine in it, which was not derived from Opel like the earlier B20x engines were.

My comment was more or less a question of who knows what will happen in regards to our situation with our cars. Not whether or not the battery will need to be replaced.

It's more likely we will purchase another car before the battery will need to be replaced.

How high do gas prices have to go for hybrids to be worth it?

Depends on the way you look at it. You could look at these as single purchases, or a series of similar purchases with decreasing hybrid premium prices, for instance. The latter is probably the better way to look at it, but people do not often do so.

Well, for the savings on gas to exceed the cost of battery replacement, I mean.

No telling. Likely, replacement battery prices will be much reduced by the time anybody needs to buy one.

I own a 2005 Hyundai Elantra and have only 1 complaint. The material that they used for the side mirrors is ****. It takes up to 20 minutes for the mirrors to be of any use in below 0C weather. The mirrors just fog up.
Other than that, great car. The suspension is way better than the Civic's in city driving IMO.
                      What?

What's the Elantra's gas mileage like?

We just traded our 1998 Accord for a 2004 Civic (non-hybrid). Plus $$, of course.

I expect the civic (which is to be the designated commuter car) to improve our gas mileage ~5mph in commuting (from ~25mph to ~30mph).

p.s. Aw, crap, your fuel economy numbers will be metric, won't they? Blah. Me lazy.

95 Dodge Ram pickup 4 X 4. Yes it's not very eco friendly, but I do actually take it off road. Not as often as I'd like though . Too much work, not enough vacation. But I did recently take it off road last December 27th (see my picture in the picture thread)

I will never buy a brand new car. Big waste of money.
I've got a '94 Saturn Wagon 6 cylinder with overhead cam. I need the extra power for mountain driving, but it's fun everywhere. I agree about buying new cars, it's cheaper to buy a "runner" every year than to buy a brand new car every 10 years.
