1994 Volvo 850 estate, auto, petrol.

The only downsides are fuel consumption at 10km/l and insurance (was £400 full comp in the UK but around twice that for tpft only when I moved to Ireland).

Don't know the standard size of a diesel engine, but a 1.9l petrol engine on a VW Polo would be pretty damn nippy. My 1.6l has got a lot of oomph.

We also did a similar cost analysis before purchasing our hybrids.

There was also a large tax write-off for each hybrid we got as well, which put the cost of the vehicle around what it would have cost for a regular, non-hybrid vehicle.

You should have had an option for Korean made cars (I know, I know, they'd fall under other) Hyundai and Kia are huge in the US. It'd be interesting to see how ownership rates of Korean cars compare to other cars.

I drive a 2003 Hyundai Accent. Automatic transmission, runs on petrol. I refer to it as my "go-cart" becuase of its small size and comically shrill horn.

My Camry has the same problem (horn) even though it's not a ridiculously small car.

It sounds like a bicycle horn.

No car. Don't need one. In fact, having one in the city without owning/renting a parking space would be a huge hassle.

                  I like cars, though.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I must admit, I've never really fancied a Korean car though...

I bought mine new in December 2003 for $9000. Gets 35-40 mpg on the interstate (depending on how hard I push it), and has a great warranty. It's definately not a glamour car, but I'm surprised by how much I like it.

Apparently you didn't do your full research if you have no idea.

They're massive NiMH batteries (usually). A Ford Escape battery, for example, costs $7000 to replace. Under typical conditions they'll need to be replaced after 7-8 years.

I don't have a car because I am a crazy enviromentalist nutjob slob who uses an old military bike to plow my way through the snow instead. Keeping your balance on those slippery ice patches gives you a good workout.
