  • Working on a new computer

I'm building a new computer to replace my old Dell Dimension 8100.

I've got my motherboard installed in the case, with the processor (and heat sink), RAM, and video card all hooked up.

That's the case it's all hooked up to. All the wires that I can figure out are connected.

Here's my question - When I plug it in, and try to turn it on, nothing happens. I wonder if it's possible that there's some problem with the power supply.

Has anybody else had a similar problem with building their own? This is my first time, and I'm mentorless, so it could be just about anything.

Make sure all the power leads are connected properly. Like the hard drives and such. If nothing is happening when you turn the power on, it sounds like there is a short somewhere, and this could be caused by something not being plugged in properly.

Are there any LED's on the motherboard that are lighting up at all? Like warning lights that could indicate a problem?

Does the power supply power up at all?

You could try unhooking the power supply and just plugging it in by itself to see if it works.

Double-check all power connections. That is most likely the cause.

Without more information or pictures, I can't really think of anything else that could be the cause at this time.

Do you have another power supply you could test with that set up? It would have to be something comparable in performance.

    Cool case, BTW.
To us, it is the BEAST.

Did you flick the switch at the back of the computer on the powersupply to "on" before pushing the button?

The LEDs, Power switch, Reset switch, and HDD wires are all connected. The LED wires are on the right polarity, but the other wires didn't have any indication for +/-, only the motherboard, so they might be put in the wrong way.

        Negatory

Does the power supply power up at all?

There's a very faint buzz, and I tried leaving it on for a half hour but it didn't feel any warmer. It's got a little fan that doesn't start up either. I think it might be where my problem is.

Yeah, I'm trying to do that as best I can without damaging anything

Yeah, my digicam is AWOL, but I do appreciate the effort.

And yes, Asher, I did flip the back power switch

Doing your own install? Would you happen to be A+ certified? Anyway, it sounds like either a bad power supply or ESD damage. Both are not unusual with do-it-yourself installs.

Make sure you have the power to your motherboard hooked up correctly. With some of the newer motherboards, you have to hook them up at more than one place. You should see at least one LED on the motherboard light up.

That was my problem last time.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. Does your power supply fan start? If not, you probably connected the "power" line wrong. If the power supply fan start does start but nothing else, check your power connections. Esp the 4x CPU power connector. Also do not forget to connect the CPU fan - I am not sure if you had burnt it, or maybe it has just powered down due to overheating.

If there is no polarity to a connector it doesn't matter which way you connect it.

I'm on board w/DanS and UR here. You may well have not hooked up one of the now three power connectors to the MB... Power and reset switch have no polarity, so it shouldn't be there.

Either way, if there is power to the board regardless of anything else, there is an LED that lights up generally that indicates that.

I'm still thinking there's a power supply issue. From what I gather, he has no fan and no heat. If the power cord is in correctly he should get that much with a good outlet.

If his power switch is connected to a wrong set of jumpers he wouldn't be able to turn on the computer

If you have an old computer, you may want to try and see whether the power supply of that works in powering up your computer...just connect minimal equipment if it has a lower power rating. It should give you some idea of the source of the problem.

The powersupply only gets hot if something is draining power from it. The same with the fan - no heat, no fan movement.

It's possible there's ESD damage, but I took precautions as best I could. Wristband and what not, plus I was putting it together in my drawers to minimize layers of clothing

There are two power hook ups to the mother board. 2x10 and 2x2, they're both in correctly. However, no LEDs light up on the mobo when it's connected.

CPU fan is hooked up. Only the two 80 mm fans in the box haven't been connected.

I've got an old power supply, but the connector won't fit into the new mother board. It's a 2x12 doodad.

If it's not the power supply I'm gonna be pretty freaking pissed.

                            Thanks for your help.

I never thought to try that.
