  • Book Review: The Starchild Trilogy

I picked up this book today, and wasn't sure what to make of it from the descriptions on the back. I guess it didn't flat out make me want to puke, so I decided to go ahead and read it.

Well, the first couple of chapters really have me intrigued and I think that I am going to like it. However, I am still not completely positive.

So, Polytubbies, tell me what you think of this book(s). Is it worth my time to read?

The Starchild Trilogy by Frederik Pohl and Jack Williamson consists of three books...
        The Reefs of Space (1964)
        Starchild (1965)
        Rogue Star (1969)

Both are "solid" authors. I read them a long time ago, and really can't remember much except that they are "OK" books. Interesting and not a bad read. However, nothing spectacular.

Well, let's just say you'll notice that these books were written four decades ago. I read them about ten years ago myself and remember the first as pretty interesting and the last as pretty weird.

Oh, the books are lies, damn lies, and an interesting twist on the truth. Don't believe them, believe only me.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

You are always a newb to those that came before you... sorry, that's the way it is.

Even if you go into the HoF. Hell, Ming has called me newb once... but he stopped when I told Chuck Norris to pay him a visit .
