From the Times of India :
Muslim groups in city rally behind arrested Imam
Mumbai : Aman committee president Fareed Shaikh has declared that the committee would provide legal assistance to Imam Ghulam Yahya Baksh . The Imam was arrested by the Anti-Terrorist Squad for his alleged links with Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists .
According to the police , the Imam of the prestigious Haj House Mosque was supposed to have helped three LeT terrorists set up base in the city to carry out subversive activities .
Shaikh had also put his weight behind alleged Al-Qaida member and first Pota accused Mohammed Afroz in 2002 . Advocate Mobin Solkar , who had represented Afroz , is likely to defend the Imam . However , General Secretary fo the Muslim association for Peace and Harmony , Rizwan Hyder , called for caution . "It is sad that an Imam has been arrested . Often cops jump the gun and later discharge the accused " , Hyder said .
Muslim ogranisations , including the Bombay Citizens' Committee , Raza Academy , and the Ulema Academy , have condemned the arrest .
This is what gets to me . The Muslim community behaves as if it is beleagured , as if it is living in some hostile foreign country , and that they have to protect each and every one of their own , even though he be a terrorist .
Blindly rallying around terrorists is not good PR . It makes it seem as if all Muslims support terrorists ( which is obviously not the case ) .
WTF ? I'd have thought that they ( the so-called "liberals" in the Muslim community ) would be the first to distance themselves from the Imam . Seems they want to be painted with the same brush as a terrorist . Where has their sense gone ?
