It is not even comparable to Airbus, which is a totally different case IMO.
One of the interesting things about this is that I think they seriously underestimate the amount of money required to do something interesting. In 2005, Google has spent over $500 million on R&D plus over $800 million on capital equipment and infrastructure. We can expect spending growth to continue to progress geometrically.

The most striking proposal seeks to create a search engine for the general public that can sort through audio, images and video as well as text.

If they manage to put that through, then

Not only would it be very convenient to the individual user, it could have very interesting consequences for the media industry as well.

A joint venture to reproduce something that everyone in Europe can already use for free (and in their own language).....

Ok, but that's no argument for business. Would be like saying we don't need US car companies, we already have Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

It can't hurt to have a bit more competition in the search engine business if they want to spend tax dollars on it. I think it is grossly unfair for governments to subsidize industry but maybe I will benifet from having a search engine which can ferret out the best porn videos on the web.

You don't have to have a search engine for that, just sign up to Pekka's newsletter.
