Some good things have come up that mean from the end on today (midnight GMT) I will no longer be posting here on Apolyton.
I would just like to thank Markos and all the staff for having provided me with such a cool place to hang out. These were the first forums I’d ever been too and I’ve enjoyed my stay.
Thanks also to all of the guys (yes all of you – every single one) that participate here, I’ve very much enjoyed our discussions, disagreements and being made look a fool on more than one occasion.
As this really will be child of Thor’s last day on poly I’d like of course to leave with some parting comments on all that poly has come to mean to me during my time here. I’ll divide it into the relevant sections that I have posted in over the years.
OT FORUM
What can I say! I came here because of a computer game (Call To Power II), and for the first year or so OT seemed like a hellish place to be – so I stayed the hell out
But it’s been hugely useful to me on many levels. Primarily it’s been responsible for awakening my political interests, before OT I was one of the “Politics is stupid – it doesn’t matter who I vote for, nothing will change so why bother” brigade.
Now that has changed. Through the OT and all the guys of wildly differing political convictions, I’ve seen the very real importance politics plays in all our lives today, and I suspect even more so in the coming future. Thank you all very much for helping me change my views on this.
Also I’d especially like to thank our American posters that have tried (and I’m sure suffered through their efforts) to help me better understand my American cousins. And cousins you really are, culturally/spiritually and even maybe through blood.
I know I’ve been a harsh critic of America (well its politics) on many occasions, but I want you to know this is because as a brit – I really want you to be what America can be (and not make all the same mistakes we did long ago), and its frustrating to see it get sidetracked in the manner it has imho.
If the world can have one viewpoint to unite us all under the banner of humanity and carry our story through the ages and into a bright future (ala Civ), then I have always believed that banner would be America – the country that was born out of so much suffering (for the immigrants and the Native people) that bonded together to form the most powerful country today.
We need this ideal spread peacefully (and that is key to its success) around the world. We need to all unite in the way America has if humankind is to survive.
Forget the cold war, forget past grievances and look to all our futures. Hatred leads to the dark side of the force.
CALL TO POWER
This is what brought me to Apolyton – and I still think it’s a fine game today; even more so with all the amazing modding work that has been done to these games. I’d like to thank everyone involved in this mammoth effort and letting me be involved in my small way – it shows a great example of positive effort by a group dedicated fans, and its not over yet!
OTHER GAMES
Provided me with a place to share my enthusiasm (and cynicism) over games and the games industry with many other decent blokes I’ve enjoyed posting with. I’ve enjoyed posting here over all other places. Games have been a part of my life since I was a kid and in our ever growing blander, glossed up hobby, I’ve enjoyed being able to post threads on many of the games that I’ve played since from about the beginning of the home computer revolution.
As a thirty year old I haven’t found my interest in gaming waning one iota, although my frustration and the ridiculous efforts I’ve had to go to (see my Daggerfall thread – where I built a PC to play that one game!), have been interesting.
Lastly and by no-means least of all thanks to Sid and the guys at old microprose for the wonderful game that is Civ.
They have provided the reason that we all came here to post and have such a great site to do so on.
That’s it, cheers to all and good luck for the future
