  • World's largest prime number found!

Okay, it's a slow news day. I expect this thread to get 0 responses.

The team at Central Missouri State University, led by associate dean Steven Boone and mathematics professor Curtis Cooper, found it in mid-December after programming 700 computers years ago.
    What?

    What terrible wording.

Wow. So I guess it'll be the biggest until they find the next one. And so on and so forth ad infinitum, making the exercise a bit futile, no?
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

No, it's important to understanding number theory to see if some theories or conjectures hold.

This has real world applications in fields such as cryptography.

            They didn't say computer years.

It says they "programmed 700 computers", and that it was done years ago.

            Hence the poor wording.

And please do not insult me by calling me an IT-guy.

Yeah, I know. That sort of was the joke.

How should we call you then?

Isn't calling him Asher insult enough?

The number that the team found is 9.1 million digits long. It is a Mersenne prime known as M30402457 — that's 2 to the 30,402,457th power minus 1.

Oooh, I have an idea! How about 2 to the M30402457 minus one! Let's put 1000 computers to work calculating that and waste a big ****ing pile o' time!
