  • Netflix vs. Blockbuster Online

Anyone used either of these two online DVD rentals? Their plans are virtually identical in terms of price, what is offered, etc. Netflix boasts a bigger selection, but that could mean little if it just more junky DVDs they have.

So I'm interested more in people's experiences, with how fast they ship DVDs, quality of service, etc.

when will they offer streaming high-quality video? That's what I want to know.

Current, mainstream/average broadband speeds make such a model impractical, at least in the US.

I use Netfix... they seem to ship DVDs quick enough.

Used to love netfilx, but it seems to be moving more slowly for me. Still really like it though, just don't love it. Would recommend it to others in a heartbeat. esp for renting television series which are too expensive at 35+/season

actually I rent DVD's at the store because I think it's stupid to pay monthly fees and then wait days to receive them

I never said anything about downloading stuff

but to ignorant assumptions!!!! (to both Verto and snoopy)

I went ahead and signed up for Netflix. I'll see how it works out.

In the meantime, any suggestions for what to rent? I've built up a bit of a queue already, and am trying to avoid the high demand, new releases.

I made no assumptions. I was remarking on Verto's remark.

I'd rather rent unless it's something I wish to keep...

don't want to waste the bandwidth or a writable DVD

snoopy: nope, you mentioned my name, meaning you, just like Verto, made the assumption I was talking about downloadery

A service like Netfliocks makes FAR more sense than renting if you are going to rent often.

In one month you pay 19 bucks, and in theory, for that much in one month, if you live near a distribution center, you can rent 15 DVD's in one month. That is less than 2 dollars a DVD to rent (assuming you get three, watch them all in 2 days, send them back, and within 3 days you get 3 more). Abnd they come directly to your home, and if you want to keep one for a long time, you can, since there is no late fee.

I have never done Blockbuster, but I heard form a friend who did that blockbuster has a smaller inventory, so you not only have a smaller selection, but some DVD's might be out for a long time.

                              yeah...

                              that's the catch though...

I usually don't rent more than 3 or 4 DVD's a month, so it really isn't worth it for me to pay the monthly fees for those services. Some months I don't rent more than 1 DVD.

I prefer to rent stuff from Blockbuster (going into the store) because it's close to my house, but my mom hates them, so we go to Hollywood more often. Hollywood isn't as good as Blockbuster, but it still is okay.

I just think that waiting for stuff to come in the mail is just stupid.

I want to be able to watch it right away, not wait a few days or whatever and then hassle with having to mail it back.

Plus, there are limits on the number of movies you can have out at any one time, there's the monthly fees that are only worth it if you watch a certain number of movies per month... it just isn't worth it IMO.
