  • computer woes.

my wife finally got her computer back from her father's friend following a reformat and re-install of windows XP. however, no CD drivers were installed, and the system does not recognize either the cd drive or the dvd drive. what further boggles my mind is how one is able to install windows off a cd without a working cd drive and having an apropriate driver.

can anyone offer some help for us?

Can you see either drive in the device manager?
    What?

yes. when we do an auto detect, it finds both of them. the problem is that it can't find the drivers for them.

Did you check the manufacturer's website?

yes. they don't have the driver for the model she has. it's an older drive, apparently.

Maybe you'll find the right drivers on one of these sites: http://www.google.com/search?q=drivers

it's an LG 8520B. i'd rather not have to join some driver site just to get something some tosspot was too lazy to install properly himself.

Something else is wrong, sb. No driver should be required other than those that are part of XP.

yeah, i was thinking the same thing myself. how can you install windows and not go through the CD drive?

Maybe boot from CD drive ?

Anyway, that lge site is pretty hopeless - don't use firefox - though - a plain search on 8520b gives two downloadable zips and one of them looks interesting (the one including 8520b).

You said you have a CD drive and a DVD drive plugged in.

Unplug one of the drives. I am 99.9% sure this will work.

btw, Blackcat is right, it's quite easy to get your CD booted, (this is how WinXP was installed). It may not be working in XP because of a conflict, once you have unplugged one of the drives, uninstall both drivers from device manager and restart your system.

After that, it should be working well, then you can try and get the DVD one to work, but I tell you, I have had a lot of trouble getting my DVD drive and my CD-writer to work together.

If you are still having problems, there is another solution in deleting some registry keys. I can't be bothered searching google for it though.

There are a number of reasons, most of them have something to do with hardware. I reckon the first thing to check is the jumpers in the back of the drives.
