    Recession or no biggie?

    Recession.

      Please no!!!!

Although I think energy demand is to the point that we would need a major world-wide slump to slow the growth here in Alberta. OIlsands projects take a decade so even a major recession is unlikely to stop them.

My brother in law works in the oil sands in a job that starts at around 75K. They are offering bonuses of 35K to any of their new hires that are still with them in 30 months. They are terrified of losing their workforce to the new projects that have been announced.

My mother works in recruiting and is having a difficult time getting business. That means job openings are drying up, which is a leading indicator of bad times ahead. Hopefully it's only a blip.

          That is a bad indicator.

Throughout Alberta, wages for skilled labour continues to rise while companies vie to find ways to retain people. The reality is that the workforce and population are insufficient to support the planned oilsands projects. Unless the projects get stopped, Alberta would be pretty immune to a recession.

I think you two re lookng at opposite ends of the problem. Chegitz' mother cannot find companies who are willing to pay her to find people to fill their openings. You are saying the companies in Alberta are having difficulty finding people to fill their openings.

Its actually an opposite problem-- I'd bet there are any number of oilsnads projects that would pay chegitz's mom or anyone else they could find to provide massive numbers of tradesmen. Heck if she could provide two dozen tradesmen willing and able to work in Alberta, I'm betting she could find someone to pay her to make the connection

This might be different than an executive search type thing and likely less lucrative per position since they don't need a CEO or a manager . . they just need hundreds of carpenters, pipefitters, electricians, plumbers etc etc etc

Every recession was predated by an inverted yield curve, but not every inversion was followed by a recession. The further it inverts the more likely the recession though.

Things don't seem to be too bad in this sector...day in day out I have to turn down the prospect of new jobs

They make damn good workers, when we can convince them to leave the Rock and come to where the work is.

I figure, move the whole province and make it easier on them.
