  • My computer is gay!

Bloody thing is wasting valuable drinking time. I bought a new DVD RW, whacked it in, using same settings as the CD RW I was previously using. Its recognised in the BIOS and in Windows, but when I put a disk in, the ****er spins up, but doesn't recognise the disk.

Any suggestions? I'm close to returning it but is there anything else I can do?

I've tried it in IDE 0 and IDE 1, and for each I've tried all the device config jumper settings on the back as well. Its obviously not a software issue as the BIOS isn't booting from the DVD (made sure that its set to boot from the DVD first). I'm stumped!

Tried many, including WinXP, Quake 4, a few music CDs, movie DVD's, and several data CD ROMs and CD Rs.

Did you remove the CD-RW from the control panel/system/hardware? 1st step I'd do is remove the DVD-RW and try the CD-RW to see if it still works.

Go into Device Manager, remove the DVD/RW (and the CD-RW if it's still there). Reboot to force Windows to recognise the new drive.

Indeed, I'm back to using the old CD-RW again, so its not a problem with my computer per se (which is now of course a red blooded heterosexual again).

I'm fairly certain its a hardware f*ck up, but has anyone else experienced this?

                      Step 2

Rather than replace the CD-RW, add the DVD-RW as a new drive i.e plug in the drive then let xp detect it.

EDIT: if it works you know the config was wrong before. If it doesnt then thats just one more piece of the puzzle suggesting the drive is kaput.
