  • Chad DOWs Sudan

Chad says it is in "a state of war" with neighbour Sudan over the security crisis in the east of the country.

It accuses Sudan of being the "common enemy of the nation" after a Chadian rebel attack on a town last week.

In a statement, the government calls on Chadians to mobilise themselves against Sudanese aggression.

Relations between the two states have deteriorated since Chad accused Sudan of being behind Sunday's attack on Adre, which left about 100 people dead.

The strong language in the statement will alarm observers who have already warned that tensions along the Chad-Sudan border are nearing breaking point.

    'Patriotic front'

In the aftermath of Sunday's attack, Chad accused Sudan of being directly involved in helping to support the Chadian rebels.

But the statement issued by Chad's government on Friday afternoon is the most aggressive yet.

It claims that not only was Sudan behind the attack on Adre, but it also accuses Sudanese militia of making daily incursions into Chad, stealing cattle, killing innocent people and burning villages on the Chadian border.

"Chad is today in a state of war with Sudan," the statement says.

It asks Chadians to form a patriotic front against what it calls "the common enemy of the nation".

The statement thanks the international community for its support so far, but says condemnations of the recent violence in Adre do not go far enough.

It appeals to the international community, including the African Union, to specifically condemn what it alleges is Sudan's involvement in the attack on Adre.

The northern 2/3 of Sudan are mostly Muslim. The southern bit is dominated by Christians and followers of traditional religions, and is likely to break away with the impending referendum.

With rebellions here and there in the north too (notably in Darfur), the gov't in Khartoum is gonna have its hands full keeping the rest of the country intact, so picking a fight with Chad ought be the last thing they'd need right now.

In the north and in control of the government, yes. In the south, the part that is in constant bloodshed, you have Christians and indigenous-belief groups that are being brutalized by the north.

It should be noted that the Darfuris that the gov't and it's allies have brutalized lately are mostly Muslim. The gov't are equal opportunity opppressors.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

It works for keeping a nation unified. Sudan isn't a nation. It's a random conglomerate of peoples and territories brought together by Mahdist and Anglo-Egyptian imperialism.

Give it back to the Pharaohs!

And they are Black muslims, not Arab/Hamito-Egyptian muslims, which seems to be a more important difference when waking up and deciding whose village to ride into, pillage the women and rape the cattle.

You forget the country is run by tribalistic Arabs bent on absolutepower and the cleansing of all other ethnic groups. That's why they've spent 30 years attempting to cleans and enslave (even the UN has spoken about the ongoing slave trade in Sudan) the Christians and anamists in the south as well as ethnically cleans blacks from the west (Darfur region).

It is stupid to pick so many fights but that's what fundies do. On the other hand no one fighting there has an effective military force so it isn't likely Chad or anyone else would be able to seriously threaten the Arab north and east of Sudan.

The Janjiweed are Black Africans, not Arabs.

Chad is also a Muslim country.

I expect the Sudanese attack has much to do with Chad giving refuge to the Darfurians.

A fairly significant portion of the population is ethnicly Arabic plus it is mostly the Arabs who are conducting the ethnic cleansing of the black muslims of Darfur. There are enough Arabs living in Suden for them to be accepted as a member of the Arab League.

                              Hmmm...

But in Darfur, the victims aren't targeted because of their religion. In fact, most of the victims in Darfur are Muslims, but they are Black Africans.

And for the Arabic Africans that make up Sudan's ruling elite, that makes the Black Africans a target.
