One aspect being missed here is the Nationalist bent of many young Tibetans- meaning they want as Tibet for Tibetans, which even if they won would mean the kicking out of hundreds of thousands of Han Chinese that have moved in and now live there. This makes their calls for autonomy or independence more problematic, as it essentially also calls for either disenfranchisement, or expulsion, of hundreds of thousands of people.
Interestingly enough, a railway to Lhasa would be a huge boon for any Tibetan economy, and yet also is the bane of Tibetan nationalism since it will make movment of others into Tibet so much simpler, meaning the Chinese can step up their
immigration into there.
