Civ3 Conquests crashes on my new laptop!

    Civ3 Conquests crashes on my new laptop!

    The Civ3 forums are a ghostown these days, so I thought I'd post this here.

    When I try to start it up, I get "Civ3Conquests has encountered a problem and must be shut down." I have installed the latest patch (1.22).

    Vanilla Civ3 OTOH works fine.

    I've got a Toshiba Satellite M65:
    WinXP Media Center Edition, SP2
    DirectX 9.0c
    Intel Centrino 2GHz, 1GB RAM
    ATI Mobility Radeon X600 SE, 128MB
    video driver date 3/22/05

    Installed the December DirectX update last night. No change. Could this be a problem with the CD not being read properly? I've had trouble with some of my other CDs too: Dominions 2 hangs the drive for instance.

    Hopefully somebody can help me get this fixed soon. I fly home to visit my folks on Wednesday and really wanted to continue my Persian game.

    Why are you playing Civ3?

    My only advice is to reinstall.

      Waiting until CivIV gets patched a few times before trying it out.

        You might also try turning off the intro movie

        From memory I think it's
        NoIntro = 1
        in the Settings.ini file

          Install Civ 2 or SMAC. Use the Conquests CD as a frisbee.

            If it's CD problem who's going to suggest the obvious and risk a ban?

              Ok. Tried reinstalling. Tried PlayIntro=0 in the INI. Still doesn't work.

              Is there a consensus forming that this is a CD (drive) problem? It works fine on my PC. Forgot to mention the laptop drive is a DVD-RAM.

              Games that do work:
              Victoria (CD to play - no)
              Hearts of Iron 2 (CD to play - no)
              MOO3 (CD to play - yes)

              Can't even get Dom2 to install. Drive hangs.

              I'm so confused.

                    cIV's already better than Civ3 was. Might as well get that.

                    But yeah trying doing what was hinted at but is not to be mentioned.

                      Well it works now.
                      All I had to do was hold a crucifix up to the display and chant "The power of Christ compels you!" a few times and...voila...I got game.

                      New slogan for the religious right:
                      "What TBS would Jesus play?"
