  • Poll: Father and God

Do you feel God is(or as??) your truely father?
    ========================================

Having read the parabole of the Prodigal Son(Luke;14,11). I can't stop thinking about this story.

Many times when walking in the street, I think at this parabole when seeing people that are asking for money, asking for help...
I work with the public in a poor part of my city, the local who live in this quarter are poor, on welfare, many people come in this part of the city just after going out of prison! Many people with many problems.
Each day I met many different kind of people, on weekdays I see people working for the government, lawyers, young professionnals, but mixed with this people, are the locals who come at my store where I work(The Source By Circuit City). With times, I met many people. Even making friend with some clients, some clients invite me to dinner. It`s very easy to me, to meet new people.

But it`s a rought quarter... We called the police on several times!

anyway, my goal is it's not to know if you believe in God or not. But more precisely, do you believe that God is your father or do you feel this way about God.
Thinking God is your truely father, make you a special relationship with life.

    Thanks,

    Dom

Since gods are an invention made by humans, often under the influence of "funny mushrooms", your question doesn't make much sense - even the banana option is far out since it demands the existence of gods.

Though, taking your question seriously, it could be fun to be the son of zeus - if I'm not wrong, the children he got with humans had some serious godly abilities.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

        Just random tought:

It's strange, to see a life withou God; as I see God as an effective psychic elements, who are integrated in my conscious life.

And I cannot live in the lack of this element. I can denying it the right to have a place in my life or give it a place to live in my consciousness. I oftenly feel the lack of him...

But anyway, for me, I really can't "understand" or think my live without the divine, this psychic elements.

        See ya, oh yeah...

Zeus is my son.... dethroning me from my throne even by eating him... This was my Fate!

        Edited:
        I can't say: I believe in God.
But I can say: The desire of God is a burning fire, and I can't go out of this fire.

              JM:
HHummm, seeing God as a mother. It's not natural in our occidental way of seeing an oriental religion as Christiannity. (Many people are forgetting that christiannity is pretty similar in certain way to buddism, an his ideal life is mainly monastic and not materially oriented)
In orthodox, they have the black Madonna who are reverred as an idols, like in my many pagan religion. (some scholars said that the black Madonna are an pagan idols integrated into orthodox christians)

But maybe if, for me as a catholics, integrated the feminine side of God in my vision of God, can help to find a little bit of more wisdom...

I think in the old testament, wisdom is see as having feminine virtue. And was eternally living with God. (she was there, in the very first step of the creation).

there is the parable or what have you by Jesus

where God is compared to a mother hen

it isn't as strong in the Bible as the Father metaphor

but that is because the times was highly patriarchal

Freud's view of the idea of God as being a version of an individual's own father image sounds true to me.

In Switzerland, they had brotherly love. They had 500 years of democracy and peace. And what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

I'd say its definitely plausible in a number of people but quite a number else won't fit that generalisation. Religion is far more complex than just one "answer".

                      Correct

But this is apparently speaking of Christianity

Not religion as a general term and yes man too oftern makes God out to much more complex than he is..he loves us and wants us to accept His Son Jesus Christ Our Lord and Savior for the redemption of our Sinfulness.

now, this is where many will come in and tear up this statement and trash God but thats between you and God, believe in Him or dont, one day you will see the importance and signifigance of this.

I hope its before Judgement day.

I havent slammed anyone only sharing.

Two things are certainly correct about God the Father

                      Number One: He is God

                      Number Two: We are not

I don't believe in God, but if I did, I don't think I would view him as either paternal or maternal. Nor would I view him as some manner of nature deity or any pagan god for that matter--as a living or breathing thing, one that we can in any relate to. To me, God is just a word, a word some people use for the universe at large, and in this sense we are all God, or part of God.
I don't see how the universe can be benevolent or malovelent. It just is. And in a way one can admire the universe for its beauty. Or the manner in which we were all created: as a long chain events, one leading to another, until our formation, extinction, and so on and so forth.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

Personally I find more natural wonder in the world because I don't beleive there was an ordering hand behind it (god).

For example if I come across a beautiful natural landscape I am filled with awe that such a thing just happens rather than if it was the intentional product of a God.

No, God is all living things and holds the universe together. Thus there is no entity to be called "father". There´s just an impersonal life force.
