I wasn't in a position to do anything. She was already sitting in the passenger seat, I was outside of the vehicle on the driver's side. I was telling her there were cops with assault rifles but she wasn't listening. The whole thing was over pretty quickly. I didn't duck to the ground. I was watching through the inside of the car, looking outside while I was still standing on the parking lot pavement.

With my mom already having her seat belt on and everything, I wouldn't have been able to do much. Plus, she had back surgery. I probably would have hurt her. If there was shooting, I would have pulled her head down, but in that position there was not much else I could have done. There was a car in front of our vehicle so I couldn't have started our car and driven off. It really was not a good position to be in.

But it's nice to know you would have made your mom pay attention to you... considering you weren't there and don't know how this whole thing went down.

Gotta love people who think they can do better in situations like this.

Trust me, there wasn't time to do anything. They just ran up to that SUV and it was over in like 5-10 seconds.

          Go diddle yourself, Sava.

I wasn't criticising your reaction. I just know what mine would have been, right or wrong.

One day in Washington DC I was walking toward a friend's place while reading a book. I saw a black combat boot in a corner of my eye and looked up. I somehow wandered into a middle of DEA raid with agents armed with assault weapons and kelvar on them.

So, essentially your mother handled it with aplomb and grace, not allowing this to bother her busy day, while you crouched and wet your pants like a little girl?

              Good story!

I see that nobody has yet commented on the well-trained cops in Sava's hometown - you know, the ones who home in on the wrong guy.

My excitement was seeing a fox fast asleep on the roof of next door's garden shed at 8.00 a.m. in the morning.

And no, it wasn't pointing a Sig Sauer at a suspected Tube bomber...

Oh, and then on Wednesday afternoon two police cars and a funeral directors' van turned up to investigate and (presumably) take away a body from a house a few doors up.

So far the fox has not been implicated...

Once I helped a friend cleaning out her dorm room, and found a few bullets in the space behind a drawer. Some of them were 6" long. We took them to the Dorm Office and the manager was scared. He was all hush-hush and told us not to tell anyone about it.

If only I could say "haha, china" to that ...

... but at the U of C they have the exact same attitude "hide the evidence and nothing bad happened"

That, and tell everyone "don't go into that area of town, too many black people who might mug you live there" ... we have a train station 3 blocks south of the university and 1 block west, yet in the list of transit options there is only:

                          - the bus like 6 blocks east of the university
                          - the once-an-hour university-sponsored-and-paid-for bus that takes a circuitous route around the downtown, and only for 6 hours a day
                          - the bus->train combo that takes you to the further away train station (red line) that's in the scheme of things more dangerous anyway

and never even mentions the train station 3 blocks south, because it's 'south' (in the "ooh, dangerous" area that's perfectly safe, just more predominantly black and with fewer university cops)

More muggings happen in the university area (57th-60th street) than on 63rd street (train station)

But needless to say, it's not everyday you see a whole bunch of cops with assault rifles like 10-20 feet from you.

                                heh. :/
