There's no going back you know. You could paddle across the river to Oatley in ten minutes. But the Shire-folk have a terrible fear of getting drownded.

Although my Dad defected, as kids we simply never knew any beach but Cronulla... the slow, parched drive down the Kingsway, past the Elephant house and on to Shelley Beach or around the corner to Gunnamatta and Stretch-mark Park. (Maroubra was only 15 minutes away, but I have only the vaguest memories of ever being there).

One bad weekend like this and we forget how much effort has gone into developing cohesion and decency within the community. Just a vague idea at this point, but I'm wondering if this sort of thing presents the opportunity for the SLSC's to become involved with the community in western Sydney. I dunno, but maybe it's a chance to open training camps, nippers classes, that sort of thing aroung Lakemba and Bankstown. (Maybe not, but it's a thought)

On a sadder note,
The Tongan church hall in Auburn burned down last night, and the Anglican church had windows broken.

Sure putting powder kegs under Anglicans has been a favourite sport for many peoples. But the Tongans?????????

I think a problem is that Australia has one of the less inclusive definitions of "white" (maybe the less inclusive) in the world, once I met an Australian who thought that there were only 2 white actors in "Friends", that the rest, Joey, the ex girlfriend of brad pit etc, were wogs.
And he was being serious.

there white pretty much just means anglo saxon,
Southern europeans, and sometimes even east europeans are not white, just wogs.
The only place were christian south europeans are often lumped with muslim middle easterners.

And that makes integration difficult.

nowadays in the usa italians, greeks, or spaniards are well integrated and considered white generally, only hardcore racists still call them dago, guido and those things.

The same doesnt happen in Australia, I dont think there is a western country I would call racist, but Australia, and Russia for example, are relatively more racist than other western countries.

Why does the ethnic groupings you consider "white" have any bearing on how racist you are or how difficult it is for "non-whites" to integrate into a society? You can have a massively inclusive definition of white and still be incredibly racist towards black people, after all.

It's sad that you base your opinion of any country on what some random bloke from that country says, anyway. Whilst Australia has its fair share of ****wits and bigots, they aren't exactly unique to this country.
