Could be. I never quite figured out the workings of that uhm.. exercise.

Let's just say I've tried to be funny in both my posts to this thread. You're the only one to pick up even a hint of it so far. Don't know whether that says more about Poly, about me - or perhaps about you.

            'kay.

compasses always point to the north, right?

and compasses are attracted to iron

and everybody knows that iron sinks

so any fool can see that the north pole is full of iron because it's on the bottom of the world

therefore australia is clearly 'on top'

I mean, what idiot in their right mind sends a bunch of thieves and murderers to populate a colony and then has the addtional wisdom to provide them convicted whores to breed off?

                Poor, poor kiwis.

Still can't get over it - we got the whores. They got the presbyterians.

I'm not looking forward to next weekend though. Emails are circulating about it all coming to Bondi.

But I'll be interested to see what happens when the Islamic gangs start in on the jewish locals.

                • A time that needs facts and sensitivity

The Herald quotes a Macquarie University academic saying "John Howard dog whistling on immigration, Bob Carr singling out the ethnicity of rapists c" ("An angry ride into the dark side of mateship", December 13).

These are times that call for sensitivity. Let me correct the record. In more than one of the notorious rape cases, it was the accused themselves who proclaimed their ethnic background. They did it from the dock. I won't repeat their comments but readers will recall what they said about their victims as well. I repeat: the rapists proclaimed their ethnicity. I and other political leaders said nothing about this aspect of the appalling gang rapes.

In 1999 - in an altogether different case - the then police commissioner advised me the shooting-up of Lakemba police station had been carried out by a gang exclusively comprised of Lebanese. As that was the truth, and the commissioner wanted it said to help in the case, the truth was put on the record.

Bob Carr former NSW premier, Sydney

Just let me point out that the gang rapes were specifically targetted at "Aussie sluts" or "Aussie Pigs."
Even during their trial, the rapists continued to insult the ethnicity and morality of their victims.

I won't draw any conclusions about the shooting attack on a police station, but that sort of thing is generally seen as an attack upon government and the rule of law. (Not that I am - generally speaking - opposed to that sort of thing)

As far as the "racist" argument goes,..
Lebanese immigration to Australia began over a century ago, being predominantly christian and largely free of violent incidents. There is a long(ish) history of immigration from Lebanon without incident. In fact, the current governor of NSW is of Lebanese origin.

Most of the "Lebs" involved in this dispute are children of muslim immigrants who arrived only recently (1970's -> ) as a result of the civil war in Lebanon. This lot is just a bunch of violent 20-something soccer hooligans - who don't really feel they belong anywhere and have been steadily targetting Australian society over a number of years.

I really do not think there is any justification for saying that the racism started with the Australians. Some of what happened was a perfectly legitimate protest at a situation that has been getting worse and worse over time.

Nonetheless, some of the behaviour of protesters at Cronulla was cowardly and racist and inexcusable.

Well said. A decade of neglect by police at the behest of the state government perferring votes to law and order has let this situation arise. People won't stand around forever while their wives/girlfriends/children/family/self are under threat of rape/death/grevious bodily harm without without ensuing justice, and now that they've started, won't stop until justice and fairness are restored.

                            • This why I'm proud to be from the Shire

                              Surfers say sorry, condemn violence

CRONULLA surfers have apologised for their role in Sunday's race riots, saying they were ashamed by the violence and vowed not to allow a repeat.

Shire surfer Brad Whittaker released the written apology last night after two days of talks between senior members of the beach's surfing community and representatives of Sydney's Lebanese community.

The statement said the surfers unequivocally rejected any form of racism and was accompanied by apologies written by younger surfers who took part in the riots.

"The day began as a show of solidarity against the behaviour of ethnic gangs who have been harassing the public on our beaches over a period of several years," the statement said.

"It escalated out of control under the influence of right wing racists, from outside this community, and alcohol.

"As senior members of Cronulla's surfing community, we will be doing everything within our power to ensure there is no repeat of Sunday's violence and we would expect those of influence in the wider community, including the Islamic community, to do the same.

"The beach is for all to use and enjoy, with everyone showing respect and consideration for each other. Our sincere hope is that some good can come out of this unfortunate episode, with all groups within our society displaying more tolerance and greater willingness to engage each other as Australians."

NRL players Hazem El Masri and Jason Stevens yesterday joined forces to condemn last weekend's violence.

El Masri, the Bulldogs' goal-kicking superstar with a Lebanese background, has been coming to Cronulla with his family for 20 years.

"Both ends are in the wrong," he told the Ten network yesterday.

"It's a public beach, it's open for everybody, but by the same token you've got to respect others and respect yourself and that's the best way to go about it."

Stevens, a Cronulla local and ex-Shark, said:

"It's obviously hard seeing it, being in the place that you live and the place that you love."
