The Dutch also build theirs to fail once in every 10,000 years. Then again, they have much much more to lose.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
            -Richard Dawkins

We're only the richest, most powerful and technologically advanced in certain threads, like this one.

                Woohoo! We're #1!
                within this thread anyways

As far as I know, neither the Dutch, Italians, nor Brits have their levees rated for very high winds and storm surge. AFAIK, they haven't built their metropolises on sand, either.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Nor have they the varying climes to put them in, nor do they have anywhere near the amount of land protected by theirs as we do ours, nor, given that current Dutch levees were built after a 1953 flood (wiki cite) that killed 1,800 people, should they take too much of a sanctimonious air about this, for their vaunted protection, too, came at the expense of a city and 4 times as many deaths.

Also, the Dutch wonder-dikes were finished in... 1998. Didn't want to rush things, apparently

The Thames barrier isn't designed to stop flooding. Its only designed to protect the City. The eastern suburbs north and south of the river being flooded instead. Its a cool design as those areas are run-down and full of chavs.
