  • Is Wikipedia even worthwhile?

According to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, John Seige-nthaler Sr is 78-year-old and the former editor of The Tennessean in Nashville. But is that information, or anything else in Seigenthaler's biography, true?

The question arises because Seigenthaler recently read about himself on Wikipedia and was shocked to learn that he 'was thought to have been directly involved in the Kennedy assassinations of both John and his brother Bobby'.

"Nothing was ever proven," the biography added. Seigenthaler discovered that the false information had been on the site for several months and that an unknown number of people had read it, and possibly posted it on or linked it to other sites.

If any assassination was going on, Seigenthaler (who is 78 and did edit The Tennessean) wrote last week in an op-ed article in USA Today, it was of his character.

The case triggered extensive debate on the Internet over the value and reliability of Wikipedia, and more broadly, over the nature of online information.

Wikipedia is a kind of collective brain, a repository of knowledge, maintained on servers in various countries and built by anyone in the world with a computer and an Internet connection who wants to share knowledge about a subject.

Literally hundreds of thousands of people have written Wikipedia entries. Mistakes are expected to be caught and corrected by later contributors and users.

The whole nonprofit enterprise began in January 2001, the brainchild of Jimmy Wales, 39, a former futures and options trader who lives in St Petersburg, Fla.

He said he had hoped to advance the promise of the Internet as a place for sharing information.

Given that the information is in some cases is either wrong or written by someone who has no background on the subject they are writting about and mistakes are not fixed as often as it's supporters claim, of what value is the entire enterprise?

Because the vast majority of it is accurate, in my experience. It is a convenient casual resource, but should not be used in academic papers.

I'm also confused about what's so bad about saying he was thought to be involved in the assassination, but nothing was ever proven. How is that incorrect?

From what I understand, that is true...

Wikipedia, like all sources, is only good when its information is cross-referenced with other sources. I wouldn't write a paper with only one book, and I wouldn't use just wikipedia either. Real scholarship and study demands multiple sources, and if one takes wikipedia with a grain of salt it can be a valuable source of information. Because it has very good summaries of things, I often use it to get an idea of a certain subject before doing deeper research.

One might as well ask what value are books, since, well, there's a whole lot of bias and bad scholarship in the world of books, too.

Good question. I once saw a wiki article claiming Bismarck was the mentor of Marx Ok, that was probably intendet to fool people, and - to be fair - it was edited our some days later.

Wiki is nice for a quick look, and if you are aware that it's not the ultimate source of wisdom it is ok IMO

The breadth of material on Wikipedia is much larger than from any other source. However, many of the criticisms against Wikipedia are valid.

            It's a good first source.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

It's quoted because it's convenient, not because people think it's "gospel." What I really like are the people who dismiss anything it says out of hand because "it's wikipedia."

I didn't dismiss it out of hand, I just don't think it should be used in arguments as a reference as it often is on this site.

Of course - but the fact that wikipedia may be more prone to flaws than other sources does not constitute a reason to give someone the every time wikipedia is cited.

I've seen some pretty poor articles and books in the research I've done, and poly-ers have brought up their share of articles that aren't worth the bandwidth they use to reach my screen. Nevertheless, we judge each one on its own merit - and I believe that each article in wikipedia should be judged in a similar manner. I'm quite unimpressed with the view held by some that, because wikipedia isn't perfect, it's worthless or dangerous. One needs only to visit a library to discover that the printed world isn't much better, only far slower to change.

I suspect this entry was written by a homosexual

"Butragueño played 69 international matches for the Spanish national team and scored 26 goals. He was part of the Euro 84 team when Spain reached the finals. He participated in the World Cup in Mexico where he played a major part, scoring four goals as Spain beat Denmark 5-1. He also played in Italia '90.

He was perceived as modest and gentle in the field and before the press, in contrast to other more aggressive or rude players. However, Spain was shocked when a photo was published showing him struggling for the ball while his well-sized genitals were accidentally visible."
