  • Music fans worldwide remember John Lennon

It's the 25th anniversary of his death

Music fans around the world are marking the life of former Beatle John Lennon on the 25th anniversary of his death.

The legendary singer was shot outside his New York apartment on 8 December 1980 by deranged fan Mark Chapman, who is currently serving 20 years to life in a New York prison for the crime.

He will be eligible for parole again in 2006, having been turned down twice already.

Paul Weller, Badly Drawn Boy, Sugababes and Jamie Cullum will be among musicians paying tribute at a special BBC2 'Lennon Night' concert taking place at London's Abbey Road studios.

Studio 2 in the building is where The Beatles recorded the majority of their hits. The artists involved will cover Lennon songs.

The transmission will be broadcast simultaneously on Radio 2 and across the US on Sirius Satellite Radio. It will air between 7 and 8.30pm GMT.

A gig will also take place in the New York studios, where Dr John and Daryl Hall will be among the artists performing.

Fans will also be holding commemorative events in the star's home city of Liverpool, and at Strawberry Fields, in Central Park, near the Dakota building where Lennon lived.

It was also outside the Manhattan building that he was shot and killed.

In Liverpool at 12pm GMT white balloons will be released from the Britannia Courtyard in Albert Dock and at 4pm GMT images of the singer will be projected on to the George's Dock building.

A civic service is also due to take place at Our Lady and St Nicholas Parish Church, opposite Pier Head, at 3pm GMT.

A one-minute silence was held at Virgin Megastores in central London at 11am GMT.

The tribute was organised in association with the British Beatles Fan Club, and will also feature a memorabilia exhibition. It is the first time in the store's history that trading will cease to salute a music artist.

A documentary about Mark Chapman, the man who killed the singer-songwriter, will be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm tonight. 'I Killed John Lennon', which will feature recordings of Chapman taped by his biographer in 1990, has been criticised by members of Lennon's family.

Meanwhile, Tom Brook - the first British reporter on the scene following the fatal shooting - will look at the impact of Lennon's life and death in his documentary, 'One Night In December'.

It will be broadcast on BBC News 24 at 9.30pm GMT.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
