I haven't been able to save any attachments on GMail in a week

You cannot mail executables on gmail, it's to prevent the proliferation of viruses.

Smart people know enough to rename .exe to .xxx or something else.

gmail is smart enough to scan inside archives for .exe or viruses.

Renaming it to .gif worked because .gif is not an archive, so gmail did not search its contents for executables.

If it did, it was a mistake in the message and it meant ".EXE", inside that rar. You can send RARs back and forth using gmail.
