Billions of dollars go missing, and suddenly I'm rich?

I think some enterprising young government official might figure that out.

Well that's why I would call the lawyer first and ask him what to do. DUH

if there is a legal way to get away with the money, getting a good lawyer would be the first thing to do

A good lawyer could probably help you keep the interest for the few days the money was on your account. That would be more money than most of us make in a lifetime.

You think too highly of banks, they make mistakes all the time.

Several years ago a woman went to a branch of a local bank to desposit a $3.9b cheque. Nobody there checked it. The Hong Kong Dollar got a little spike because of that. Not after a few hours that she was found to be a bit nutty and the cheque should be voided.

Only for small sums. People go to the bank for large sums.

Thus, it is indeed possible to grease the palms of the bank manager and a few people to shift the $$$ out from the account.

It was undoubtedly not a check but an electronic payment. A check gets handled by people who have a chance to notice something is wrong.

Large banks routinely move gigantic sums around by wire transfer. If it went into the wrong account they wouldn't notice right away.
