          Nikko

I have only spent about a week anywhere east of Nagoya, and most of that time was in Tokyo itself, so I don't have too many suggestions either. If you like Japanese castles, probably the second finest remaining original one is in Matsumoto, which is about 2.5 hours from Shinjuku.

Somewhat closer, there is the area of Hakone south of Mt. Fuji. It is a bit of a tourist trap, but supposedly enjoyable in the right state of mind. (I did not go, but my brother enjoyed it.)

In Tokyo itself, I would recommend the Odaiba area, artificial islands in the harbour area. There are several good museums and some interesting architecture (Fuji TV headquarters and Tokyo Big Sight), plus you get to see the Statue of Liberty!

If you have more money than time, you could get to Kyoto (by shinkansen) more quickly than either Nikko or Matsumoto, though at almost twice the cost. Plenty of things to see here, but I would recommend staying at least two nights if you do go.

And by the time you might visit, Kyoto should be relatively free of the plague of tourists that have recently descended upon the city to view the autumn foliage.

I'm afraid I can't provide much useful advice in this department. Maybe something nice for them to hang on the wall with a not too 'bombastic' U.S. theme? Either painted or embroidered, there must be tons of nice things to be had.

But one thing I can do is wish you a nice trip, Timex. Sounds awesome. And good luck.

                Bring back pictures!!

Verto - I haven't had that good a laugh in weeks.

Timexwatch - ask the GF! Woman usually LIKE to be asked on things like this, and she can probably help you out here. And she'll respect you in the morning...

                    Ask the girlfriend

She's indecisive on this, and acting very Japanese by saying that no presents are necessary. Which is usually woman code for "you don't have to, but it would really score you some points if you did". It's also the same thing with the touristic stuff...she's always been in and around Tokyo-Yokohama and doesn't really have a tourist perspective. She does, however, have an eye for my needs in planning an excursion the the brewery for $2 limited edition brews

And Verto is a rat bastad...but still a funny rat bastard

I think I'll be on the lookout for engrish t-shirts in Japan or other funny ones like "Bukkake in Nagasaki". I can see something like that being a big hit in hipster bars...or Dupont Circle

Tell her that she needs to entertain you, so she better start planning!

(As somebody who lives in Washington, it is expected that you have things like this figured out.)

It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. I do political fundraising and events for a living. Sometimes I need to be planned for!

And I think I will be somewhat entertained. But she didn't think the request for a menage-a-trois with her sister was very funny or good entertainment. So I think we'll have to settle for less naked and more cultural activities.

Hey I was just in Japan a month ago (already ) as my good mate got married.

I got around quite a bit... Nagoya - Kyoto - Tokyo... and in Tokyo I'd suggest to go to Mori tower in Roppongi Hills... Go to Tokyo view... It's awsome and if you go at the good time you will see the Sun set behind the Fuji Mountain ... It's not too expensive either I think it was 2000 yen per person.

Other than that I wanted to go to Odaiba but didn't have enough time... in the three days I was in Tokyo I had enough time for the following:

Day 1. oops... forgot that during the day we were wandering around the Emperors Palace... later on Shibuya and met with some friends (from uni here in UK), stayed out
Day 2. Roppongi Hills/Mori Tower until the evening, than in the evening went out to Omotesando and met one more girl we didn't meet the day before ...
Day 3. Went to Akihabara to check it out, and Ueno Market do do some shopping before we were due to go back + dinner in Ikebukuro

That was it... we stayed in a hotel in Odsuka...

Japan - IMHO = promised land - the way modern life is meant to be ... organized, advanced but still in touch with tradition and suprizingly beautiful nature is never far away I'd move there tomorrow if I knew Japaneze
