God is love indeed. Tough love, obviously...

Interesting that you think he 'punishes' civilizations. If god were to punish Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists, then a tsunami seems a rather inadequate way to do it.

A communicable painful disease with numerous vectors and disgusting symptoms seems a much better idea.

Has god run out of those ? Used them all up in Pharaonic Egypt and against the Assyrians ?

      Just plain bonkers.
Indignation at evil is not a sin. And God's anger is not like ours, it is perfect and just. "Vengeance is Mine" Saith the LORD- "I will repay."

      • Many theists seem horrified at how non-theists could possibly have a coherent sense of morality, seeing as there is no 'ultimate, unescapable, punishment' awaiting them.

However, not everyone needs "the fear of god up 'em" to have a moral code. Furthermore, as that moral code is rooted in secular, legal humanism, rather than ancient texts and a spiritual hierarchy, it is more adaptable, and less likely to be remain anachronistically oriented to a set of social relations appropiate only to a certain point in space-time (eg - Islamic law and 7th century Arabia).

This is exactly the thinking of, for example, the 9/11 and 7/7 terrorists.

You're more than welcome to express your views in the appropriate thread. However, Elok asked in his first post that you not do so in this particular thread. Apparently, being a Bible professing Christian gives you the right to be rude.

If you'd like to troll atheists (and everybody who isn't a fundamentalist Christian), then start a thread on the subject of how much better you are than everybody who disagrees with you.

            • I am honestly amazed every time a religionista asks this question. I ran into in college once.

"You seem like a pretty moral guy, Rob."

              "Umm, thanks Gregg."

              "But you're an atheist."

              "Yeah..."

I had to work pretty hard not to just laugh at him. The absurdity of believing that the only thing that will keep people from running amok is the belief in God! Especially given that said belief doesn't appear to do that anyway

              • Well, thanks Loin, but this argument wasn't going anywhere in particular. Every time we started to, somebody would put words in my mouth ("so all atheists must be immoral?") or start ranting about the Inquisition. Besides, the floodgates have opened now, there's no closing them. Actually, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

If Philo, or anybody else, wants to try, he/she can be my guest at this point, provided they don't pretend they speak for me. To answer GePap's question, I have no particular problem with polytheism, though I do wonder which god they're ultimately supposed to listen to if push comes to shove. Note that I don't consider Hinduism polytheistic, as their gods are all aspects of the same brahman.

                • AFAIK, the Norse derived (some of) their morals from the basic underlying theme of their pantheon (that the purpose of life, more or less, is to prepare for Ragnarok) and less so from the individual deities. Individuals may have special reverence for Odin (for his wisdom) or for Thor (for his strength), but that doesn't really equate to any kind of moral judgment.

The Greeks didn't really derive their moral code from their deities -- their deities were basically just humans with fantastic powers and a proclivity for rape and jealous rage. Though the worship of Athena may have been an exception.

The difference is that Allah is not God, and Jesus Christ IS God. Jesus Christ fulfills hundreds of Old Testament prophecies. Jesus Christ confounded the world and brought all the powers to shame by His Mighty Crucifixion. Christians everywhere produce miracles in his name

Islam has none of this. Islam is bland and uninspiring.

And secondly, saying Vengeance is not ours, but God's- is actually the exact opposite of the 911 terrorists. The 911 terrorists put vengeance into their OWN hands, whereas the Bible teaches that Christians should turn the other cheek and wait for God to take vengeance (and trust me- God always comes through). The exception to this are Christian nationstates, which may use force to spread and enhance the gospel proclamation.

As Elok already stated people were already going off on various avenues, it wasn't just me. If the thread was sticking to its topic then I wouldn't have intervened, but people were already making snide pro atheist or pro theist comments, read the thread again.

As I said, being a Bible professing Christian evidently gives you the right to be rude. However, it does not give you the right to post spam and/or insults.

Allah is the Arabic word for God. Arab Christians call their deity "Allah."
