Iraq insurgents launch raids on U.S. bases

Shall US bases ever fall? How would Bush react when US bases fall?

The radio report I heard this morning on NPR said that the attackers were thought to be Al-Quaida linked. But this doesn't seem to be A-Q's M.O. They like "soft" targets. Either they've gotten around to the idea that slaughtering (fellow muslim) civilians was alienating supporters, or this wasn't them...

The attacks in Ramadi occurred as local tribal leaders and U.S. military officials were to hold their second meeting in a week at the governor’s office in the city center.

Residents said that within minutes, scores of masked gunmen, believed to be members of Jordan-born militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s al-Qaida in Iraq group, ran into the city’s streets but dispersed after launching attacks with mortars and Russian-made Katyusha rockets.

Given the goal - preventing our forces from meeting with & cooperating with local leaders, perhaps it was indeed the AQ boys.

Indeed. They were doing this two years ago when I got there and they were doing this one year ago when I returned home (exactly one year ago this month). There is nothing new here.

The typical break down is that the big car bombings, especially if they target Shi'a, are done by various Islamic groups while the nightly mortar fire tends to be done by locals who want to fight the invaders or are unhappy about living conditions.

That's the one thing that the US desperately hopes the insurgents/Al Quaeda are dumb enough to do: abandon guerilla/terrorist/urban warfare tactics and come out to confront them.
That would be a fast ass-kicking.

Thought the term Al Qaida is often used like it is one big terror group who controls quite all group. This while there are a ton of group who may be inspired by them but who for the rest have no conection with them at all.

The question is, can the US's (sorry, GDI's) ion cannon take out their construction yard to stop them replacing all their destroyed buildings and people?

Yeah.. I don't see them taking any bases.. I don't believe they would even try that at this point, US bases are too strong for now. Maybe in year or two, basically the demand for troops to get back home is serving their cause so why mess that up and launch major offensive to take one or two bases, that would mean high losses, and it would give press back home where the opinions of falling back might backfire.

So I think it's just harassing, keep people on their toes a little so it won't get too comfortable. That's all..

This would be my opinion, I don't exactly know what they would be now thinking.
