Poor Merryl Streep, all that care to get the accents right was for nothing, then?

"making a movie about New York and substituting shots of New York with those of Vancouver"

LOL it's Toronto that's the usual stand-in for New York...many's the time I've been watching some movie that's supposedly set in New York that is obviously on a Toronto street

Yeah, IMDB confirms all of the on-screen asian actors were Japanese.

except for Tom Cruise and the English translator I would think.

It would be like making a movie set in the middle east and substituting hispanics for arabs or making a movie about New York and substituting shots of New York with those of Vancouver. They may look close but it shows that the filmmakers didn't go the extra mile.

Asians are especially sensative about this sort of thing, I've seen. I can imagine the furor that would go on in China if some Chinese national hero was portrayed by a Japanese actor.

QOTM once was an extra on a film where Baltimore stood in for New York. Her job was to drive her car down a street in Bolton Hill, which stood in for Brooklyn Heights. Which wasnt a bad substitution. However the opening, in which an aerial view of downtown Baltimore stood in for Manhattan, was about the most awful such substitution Ive ever seen.

BTW, the film was "Her Alibi" and starred Tom Selleck. If you rent it, you may note the scene where someone is released from prison - thats the 5th regiment armory. My wifes "scene" is the one in the quiet restuarant/coffee shop. There are cars driving by in the background. If you can make out a blue Nissan Sentra, thats QOTM.

Yep, both of them. If I were to make a TRU7H CONTINUUM for this thread, you wouldn't be wrong.

Who cares what Asians think, as long as they keep giving us cheap, sh*tty DVD players?

                            WAAAAHHHH!!!!!!

I'm so pissed of that most of the actors on the former series, Queer as Folk were straight!

Hmmm...so you would agree then that to cast "the engineer" in Miss Saigon as a white man would be equally as unreasonable?

I know nothing about Miss Saigon, as I'm not homosexual.

Were the actors in the Last Samurai actually Japanese? (I have never seen the movie, just curious.)

Yes. Would've been much more difficult to cast Chinese actors in those roles, given that much of the dialogue was in Japanese.

so what's the deal with Geisha's? did they put out or what?

They put out, but only if you were uber-rich and could afford to subsidize their lavish lifestyle for an extended period.
