India is a good 15-20 years behind China due to its government's timid steps towards desocializing the economy. Right now it is the second fastest growing economy in the world and it has a huge number of medium sized companies which will become big companies in the next decade. Exports will grow just like they did for China. Though I suspect they will grow at a slower pace for India then they did for China simply because now all the Asian countries are trying to copy the Chinese (and before the Japanese) export driven model. That means more competition then China faced when it started down this path.
Sometimes it pays to be the first guy trying out a new model.
The government did not collapse immidiately after the coup-there were months between August and December. You can see that form the good ol' Calendar.
But look at what happened- politicians tried a coup without getting backing from the Army. That the Defense and Interior Ministers back it does not mean that the Chiefs of Staff do-the army was obviously very lackluster in its caryring out of orders.
And the fact that troops on the field and thier commanders did not act as the ministers wanted adds to my statement about junion officers- of course, dashi will claim that in China people know their place better.
Can no longer respond to me directly?
One can explore the issue theoretically. or try. or they can spout stuff about "it alwasy happens, cause of their culture."
I've never made any such claim. You're the one who argues certainities based on ignorance, Inevitable G.

I was speaking only about the events of August, not the further changes afterwards. Pardon if that was not clear. And yes, I know the army was lackluster. But IIRC the army was not against the coup either - just some units were, unless my memory is failing me. Whether the rest of the Army would have moved against the recalcitrant units, and how everyone would have dealt with the procurement issues you raised, is an open question, as the coup plotters gave up fairly quickly. The SU case doesnt show prolonged civil war (or multifactional collapse) in a modern power to be impossible - it shows the coup plotters in this instance didnt have the cojones to even try, once it became clear an easy coup wasnt possible.
Whats the most "modern" instance of a civil war or collapse. I think Spain. In terms of reliance on mechanized warfare, etc Spain 1936 was more advanced than Afghanistan 1994 - or was it? Both were backwards compared to China 2005, though, right? How did the Republicans and Loyalists each manage to procure fuel?

Foreign powers participated heavily in Spain, helping to supply both sides, and helping arm both sides extensively. Neither gained control of the ports, so both could bring in supplies. This can be seen in Afghanistan too, as foreign powers supplied the sides, with Pakistan in particular sinking in a good amount of supplies. BUt the war in Afghanistan only occurs AFTER 10 years of war already, which shattered the central government, much like what occured in Somalia after the long civil war and the fall of the communist dictatorship in '91.
