One thing that i'm glad about is that not many people have guns here, or in the neighbouring countries. I don't like the idea of everyone walking around with guns.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

Trust us, we Americans don't either.

MrFun, when you stop thinking that "liberal" is defined only as ones attitude towards sexuality issues, perhaps you'll understand Echty's comment.

so anyways, I was eating at this french place the other day. And I've come to the conclusion french really know their cheese. They may not know military tactics, but they know how to make good cheese. And that's more important.

Whats with all the "French are wimps" nonsense anyway? Napoleon lost because he got the rest of Europe attacking him. France last in 1870 because Bismark was a brilliant diplomat. They fell quickly to Hitler because they were still exausted from WWI. Bad luck does not = wussiness.

Odin, it's because of De Gaulle, and his inability to be america's complete ***** post WWII. Americans loved france before that. Then you people have gotten the idea that the whole world owes you, like you weren't fighting for your own benefit and safety, just as well as for others.

that's why you notice I didn't call them wimps. I just said they had bad military tactics. Yes, it is bad tactics to start a war with the rest of europe (esp. russia).

Ask any American and they won't mention a thing about De Gaulle but they will mention doughboys and GI Joe. From our point of view, it's as if we had to come over twice to remove Germans from French soil. That's where the "belief" comes from.

Now I disagree with the sentiment, of course, but to say it stems from our (mis)understanding of De Gaulle's post WW2 objectives is patently ignorant of a true American perspective.

I guess I am with Drogue on a lot of his sentiments, well, except for the whole "national pride" business, since I have 0 tolerance for something so stupid.

Oh, and I guess instead of saying just Italy I would add Spain to the unhurried life view.

European societies tend to be more liberal than American society!
When Europeans say liberal they normally mean classical liberals where as Americans mean politically left of center. Same word with two different meanings. You should know this from hanging out at poly as long as you have.

Japan is pretty fascinating. A country of robotics, elegance, anime and beyond-imagination perversities all at once.

The US, Germany and China are also amazing IMHO.

For me, when thinking of culture in a somewhat 'broader' sense: Britain, Russia, Israel, Japan, United States, India, Romania, Korea.

Ask any american? Yes. However, here as in most cases, there is a difference between the public perception of the origin, and the real origin.
