Notice the "But" before the next paragraph, which you conveniently seem to leave out, before talking about "live CDs," which shows to anyone with basic English skills that he's switching to a different subject.

I guess Slow just hasn't heard of live performances sold on CD. It's just another way for musicians to make more money . But some sound pretty good.

But they aren't exactly the same as being there. As they touch that music up in the studio to sound better. Although Slayer claims to not have done this on their Decade of Aggression double CD. And that is an excellent CD of a live recording. You see slow, it's a pain in that ass using that many words. That's why I say live CD.

but it seems in rock music, they can never play as good as the studio recording. Of course you would expect this. As they double up a lot of sounds. Esp vocals. And some bands such as Pantera who only have one guitarist, use 2 guitars during the solo parts. Obviously you can't reproduce that live unless you bring in another guitarist.

What I like about live classical performances is they can play music that at least to my ears, sounds flawless. Where as rock music they just can't do this. Although it doesn't help when the musicians are coming out on stage drunk, high or both. .

100-piece orchestras can mask flaws, I suppose... but I can hear them often enough. But I don't mind--music sans flaws is music sans soul. It's the little imperfections, the nuances that make a performance something special. I have over 20 recordings of the Brahms 4th symphony. Not a one is "perfect" by the measure of what I would do, but each brings something different and admirable to the table.

        Except the Karajan.

Since we talk about live disc or studio disc:

Metal music: Studio.... It's really hard to have the clean and rich sound of any studio album. For any metal fans here:
Death - The Sound Of Perseverance. Better have the studio album than the live dvd.(even if the live dvd, ****ing rock, and the drummer is faster in the show than in the studio.... )

Classical: Live or not. It's the same thing for me. Since many classical are already recorded live. But it's a pain in the ass, when you hear a spectator coughing in classical music.

Best live dvd/album ever: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up, and Shaking the Tree...... Peter Gabriel and Paula Cole!! WOW WOW WOW. Beautifull moments of music we've got here, I must urge anyone who love P. Gabriel to go buy the Shaking the tree album and Growing Up. And it's better than the studio album!

I forget to talk about canadian greatest pianist, Glenn Gould. All his album are.... perfect.

You even hear him quietly singing each note at the same time he play some Bach prelude et fugue.... Wow wow wow!!!!

Gould's recordings are mostly studio work, IRC.

                  Studio... no contest...

                  1. the music is the best possible quality... the imperfections edited out... they do as many takes as possible until it is done right... they can mix, cut, add effects... basically, they have the time to create a finely crafted piece of work

                  2. no people... people suck... maybe live music would be good if I had a private performance or something, but a concert with tens of thousands of people? no thanks... even a smaller setting sucks, like a club... I've been to enough shows in my day... I have no desire to go to any more

                  3. live performances suck... sorry, but sometimes bands have bad nights, sometimes guys are drunk or stoned or just aren't into it... also, you have no control over what songs are being played... with studio music, I can play whatever I want, whenever I want

obviously some kinds of music will be different... like for Boris, he is into classical music... I'm sure those shows can be quite amazing for lovers of that kind of music

oh the worst is live CD's... what is the point of these?
To us, it is the BEAST.

                      True. My fault...

What I wanted to say; Gould recording are special. They have something other pianist doesn't have, not just because you heard hin singing(quietlu) the each note while he is playing piano. But they have something special...

                      see ya

yeah you always wonder why you hear coughing. annoying. They should cough during the loud parts, not the quiet parts.

In general I prefer studio recordings both for their ability to cherry pick the best performances from the artists and as a showcase for the skills of the artists, producers, engineers etc. It helps to cover up the seemingly ever-diminishing degree of mastery of their craft that many modern musicians seem to suffer from, particularly vocalists. That said there are some musicians and some live performances which translate pretty well in a recording.

Because artists frequently perform versions of their work that are entirely different to those produced in the studio, or do cover versions that never get to studio album releases, unless of course they're 'live' releases like Thin Lizzy's 'Live And Dangerous'.

You can also capture a group line up that may never have recorded a studio album- like the Talking Heads' funkified extended line up post Remain In Light.
