Im old enough to have been all excited by Howard Hughes investment in what was it, the the Glomar Explorer, a billion dollar research ship that would make it possible to commercially exploit manganese modules from the ocean floor, and avert future metal shortages. I mean it was really cool, and there were articles in Time magazine and all.
Except it turned out later it was all cover for a CIA plan to pull up a sunken Soviet ballistic missile sub.
But that took billions of dollars, and years of planning, and eventually came out. And didnt require the kind of mental gymnastics certain conspiracy theories do. All you would have to have heard back then was the suggestion that was what was going on, and it would have seemed credible. Im sure there are things going on now that we will find out about later, that will surprise us. But i doubt any of them will match to the conspiracy theories going around.
False flag terror op accusations have the advantage that they HAVE been tried before. Mossad actually did do something like that in Egypt way back in the 1950s. Which is often cited by conspiracy theorists.
