What makes you conclude they are probably not cost effective or practical? They're certainly going to be a lot cheaper to build that subways. And I see nothing which would make them especially expensive to operate.
BTW: If you have one monorail line running off in one direction and a second running off in a different direction, then you have monorails.
El Kabong has the best answer to this in the first threat linked to by JohnT. They would probably not be able to handle the same volume as a subway system, not even close.
IN NYC the only monorails are the new special trains to JFK airport.

According to some links, the monorail can be cheaper to run than light rail. For example, http://www.laorangemonorail.com claims that rubber wheels on flat concrete beams (rails) get about 100,000 miles of wear before having to be replaced.
Monorails don't collide with surface traffic, the way light rail trains do; plus you usually don't need to acquire right-of-ways.
you guys thinking about monorails should look to Las Vegas. We needed 50,000 riders a month in order to break even. Right now we have 30,000 riders a month.
On the other hand, both Tokyo and Seattle have monorail systems that are turning a profit.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Anyway, aren't monorails pretty slow?
Depends upon the driving device. You could build a slow one, for putting around zoos, airports, Las Vegas, etc. Or, you could build a really fast one, if there are long distances between stops.
They say those things are awfully loud.
If it's metal wheels on a metal track, sure. If it's rubber wheels on a concrete track, it's very quiet.
