This is good news...for the Turks. With every new candidate, the EU gets closer to admitting Turkey, because with every new candidate, they dilute their own rationales for keeping Turkey out. The EU has clearly decided that it's no longer about upholding the most cherished values of Western civilization; apparently it's becoming nothing more than a Christian free-market zone -- though, since they'll never admit that, ultimately such a strategy will work in Turkey's favor.

How about FYRAPEUMOM (Former Yugoslav Republic And Provisional European Union Member Of Macedonia)? There has to be some comedy potential in the "RAPEUMOM" part...

edit: If you say it right, it kinda sounds like some English dumbass saying "if I rape your mom".

What?? When has EU been about upholding the most cherished values of Western civilization, what are those anyway, and how does admitting Macedonia dilute that?

Various EU bureaucrats and Eurpoean politicians like to blather on about how the EU is really about Europe's common experience and heritage of Enlightenment values like democracy and individualism. Then the EU turns around and pland to admit countries that have no such similar exeprience or heritage -- Balkan states, for example, or countries like Romania. At least teh French get it; they don't want Eastern European states to join, either. But there's no logical rationale for admitting Balkan states and keeping Turkey out, which is why this will ultimately work in Turkey's favor.

Rufus, I think EU was about

                              1) preventing future war
                              2) free trade

Culture is a side issue there, especially since renessaince, enlightement, national revival and all other movements and processes were not expirienced by all European countries at the same time, nor in the same manner. Balkans was through much of that probably nearer the European core than Finland was, though both were periphery.

In short, admitting Balkans doesn't jeopardize European values.

About Turkey, if you feel Christian = European, then yes.

That's all I'm saying. Aside from the Christian card -- which Western Europe is reluctant to play (and rightly, given their own immigration issues) -- there's no logic to admitting Macedonia or Romania to the EU but excluding Turkey; It'd be like admitting Honduras and Equador to the Organization of American States but excluding Brazil.
