  • Traveling Issues

Ok, I'm flying to Long Beach, CA tomorrow for a conference because I am a devoted NYRA indentured servant (upgraded from my status for 6 years as NYRA slave), and since my friends/housemates out here all suck, and since Dulles airport in Virginia is much cheaper for this flight than the far more convenient Reagan National, I'm facing a dilema.

    Do I:

    A. Take bus and metro the whole way?
    B. Drive?
    C. Get a taxi or supershuttle?

    A. The cheapest option, and the one I was originally considering. But looking at how long it'll take I'm no longer sure. The timetable on this would involve me walking to the nearest bus station and then riding that bus to the metro station (about 30 minutes), then metroing to Roslyn, VA (about an hour), then getting another bus from there to Dulles Airport (another hour).

So this option would involve 2.5 hours of travel TO the airport, then about 2 hours at the airport, and 5 hours flying to California. Then whatever time from that airport to my hotel. LONG day. Transportation cost though would probably be around $5.

On the way back, my flight gets in at 5 am, and the first bus out of Dulles leaves at 6.30, so I'd have to wait around for 1.5 hours, then hour of bus, hour of metro, and then I'd have to walk 1-2 miles back from the metro station cause the last bus doesn't run on Sundays. Another LONG day. But probably only another $5.

    B. Or, perhaps I could drive. It'd probably only take me a little over an hour to travel to the airport (as opposed to 2.5 hours). Plus I wouldn't have to time any buses or wait for their schedules, so less waiting time. So this is MUCH better time wise. And much better on the way back since I can just go home right away, I don't need to wait for any bus.

Problem is cost though, cause I'm damn poor. Parking at Dulles is $9 a day for the economy lot. So it'd probably be like $36 or so for parking. Plus maybe $5 in gas each way (conservative estimate with my car...). So $50ish dollars compared to like $10 with option A..... $40 is a lot of money for me.

    C. This option probably isn't happening. One way trip to Dulles is like $26 for the Supershuttle. No doubt like $50 for a taxi. So the shuttle would cost me as much as driving, and it wouldn't be as fast since we'd have to pick up/drop off other people.

Ugh.... traveling can be a pain in the ass sometimes....

I don't know about the DC stuff but you need a car while you are here so don't even think about public transportation, although downtown LBC does have a rail car.

I'm not going to be going very many places while there. So I should be ok once i get there.

Check out out Metro's website for trip planning.
Metro news and service information for the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia region.

You should be able to pick up a 28 or 48 RideOn or a Q2 Metrobus just a couple of blocks from your house to get to the Rockville or Twinbrook stations. Then take a 5A from West Falls Church (not Rosalyn!!) to Dulles. You should check times on the return trip, but busses run from the airport pretty much all hours, and by the time you get back to the West Falls Church station you should not have too long of a wait.

I've done the Rockville - Dulles trip by public transit plenty of times and it does not take nearly as long as you think .... and you are closer to either of the two local Metro stations than I am.

PS: BWI might be cheaper than Dulles for some flights, and its even easier to get to if you take the Green Line to Greenbelt, and a direct bus from there.

Alright well if your hotel and the convention are close to each other you should be okay.

Downtown LBC is generally pedestrian friendly, especially for conventions.

The 5A doesn't stop in West Falls Church. Its the one I was looking to take from Dulles to Rosalyn. Unless I'm totally missing something.

It stops at Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride Lot and the Tysons-Westpark Transit Station, are either of those near metro stations? The ride calculator at WMATA says to go to Rosalyn and get the 5A there. As far as I can tell that's the only metro stop (besides l'enfant plaza) the 5A stops at.

btw, on the timing thing... I think 2.5 hours is pretty on target. 1 hour from Rockville to Rosalyn seems pretty standard. Maybe a bit less depending on waiting for a transfer. The bus from Rosalyn to Dulles is an hour, that is right in the schedule. 30 min from my house to the metro is a bit high, but not by too much.

On the way back, the first 5A bus picks up at Dulles at 6:30 AM on Sunday. I get in at 5.

Take the cab. It's not a bus on a route. You have it for hire.

                      Sorry, minor brain cramp.

Washington Flyer Taxicabs serve Dulles Airport exclusively with 24-hour service to and from Airport

Washington Flyer runs from West Falls Church.

Metrobus 5A is $3 one way from Rosalyn to Dulles. Washington Flyer is $8 one way from West Falls Church to Dulles. A bit more expensive, but a lot quicker than driving all the way out from Rosalyn. Your call.

                      Timing:
Its 35 min from Rockville to metro center; not much more from there to Rosalyn; and quicker if you go from West Falls Church. My experience is about 2 hours door to door. (Bring reading material.) Looking at schedule, 5am Sunday could be problematic. (Haven't done that one before.)

                      Note on Airport vans:
                      1. Sometimes they don't show up (happened twice in last 5 years).
                      2. If they do show, they often make multiple stops in Bethesda on the way in, leaving you tight on time at the airport end. (Not a good thing given DC airport security.)
Conclusion: If you are going to use a van, lie about the flight departure time.

edit: Way late so off to bed.
