We've had to cull several bison here in California too. They were introduced to Santa Catalina Island (off LA) in the 1920's to use in western movies but the population exploded and in the 1980's the state department of fish and game decided to cull the heard to prevent over grazing. Protestors won out and the Marine Corp agreed to relocate several dozen to Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County. Now the heard has gotten bigger then Pendleton can support so the state has shoot several off them to prevent over population. There were protests but one of the nice things about a big military base is the military can keep the protesters off military property.
