Right now we're finding our Canadian and Mexican colonies to be very profitable.

Unfortunaley, the East Iraq Oil Company seems to be a poor investment, and our South American colonies seem to be in open revolt of our economic system.

That's true, though those are the 3 big powerhouses in South America

The other ones get elected on anti-USA messages but then suck up to the USA when they get in power

some quotes from an active civfanatics thread by an argentine and a brazilian.. on the far right side

----To be fair, there were many countries in the Americas that wanted to actually get things done in the summit, and set deadlines for getting rid of tariffs and subsidies. I'm talking about Chile, Colombia, Mexico, the USA, Costa Rica, Panama and many others.
On the other hand, there was the disgusting backwards leftist axis that opposed trade liberalisation and ruined the summit. I'm talking of Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. Here in Brazil we will get rid of Lula in 2006, I suggest you get rid of Kirchner, otherwise our nations will continue to be a continental shame and we will fall behind (we're already falling behind, specially you argies).
BTW, Bush's speach at the Brazil-USA summit in Brasília was excellent, too bad I doubt he will actually enforce what he preached and promissed.

--I'm a republican: i defend free markets, limited government, labour flexibility, etc. That's the key to progress. Why is it so difficult to recognize the results all around the world.
If the capitalist reforms of the 90s didn't work in South America it wasn't fault of capitalism. It was because they weren't complete: consisted in open markets, but combined with too restricted labour and high taxes, resulting in enterprises disappearing for not being able to fire people and reduce costs, thus unable to compete with imported goods.

What they do is just irrational. The South American leaders defend incorrect theories, like saying: !commerce is assymetric! The theory of dependence. The marxist theories. . They don't have a clue about modern economics.

We, the argies, should watch Chile and Ireland as the models, not Venezuela and Cuba. If USA want to subsidy agriculture it's up to them, it's a bad policy.

There shouldn't be riots. We're supposed to be rational. The army should have taken the streets to defend the Empire of the Law. And to defend the merchants against those irrational hordes.

From my understanding, the privitization and free markets idea got so out of control in Argentina that it was a main contributor to the meltdown in the late 1990s

The US is viewed as basically pushing these free market ideas on the Argentines but not helping them out when sh1t hit th fan.

Then we have the feeling that Bush has ignored many leaders there because of their disagreement over the war in Iraq

I do agree the "Republican" guy trying to push the theory that they "just don't know what they are doing," seems rathar ignorant himself.

At the time of the revolution earnings from tobacco made up 20% of englands GNP.

actually, we (brazil, argentina, most south american countries) like it when we are ignored by the USA

we have more economic freedom when the USA has other priorities (Iraq, Terrorism, Some war somewhere else), and doesnt care much for latin america.

the usa doesnt really have a lot to do with the argentine crisis, that was the argentines fault (they chose to adopt those ideas), the only foreign entity with some guilt is the imf.

the usa has been better and more positive than many european countries with argentina during and after her crisis.
after all, it is europeans who have now worthless, argentinean debt bonds, and it is europeans who bough all the privatized companies.

the reason why brazil, or argentina dont want the free trade with the usa is because of the farm subsidies, it screws brazil argentina and uruguay particularly hard because they are big agro-exporting countries, the other countries, peru, they are not very affected by tha, but brazil, argentina and uruguay are screwed badly.

if there were no subsidies they would join the free trade zone.

But I dont think the usa will get rid of subsidies, because republicans need the votes of the farmers.
