Well, if the southern waters are more dangerous, then the northern waters are not.

Arggg, the Founding Fathers are all over this problem:

      Article I; Section 8. The Congress shall have power . . .

      . . . To define and punish piracies and felonies committed on the high seas, and offenses against the law of nations;
The weirdest statement that's come out of this so far is one by a spokesperson for the cruise line who stated that employees are trained to handle this kind of situation.

why would people want to cruise off Somalia is what I'm asking. I suppose it's exotic and wild. But I'd rather see Asia.

I remember Thai pirates being a real problem at the end of the Vietnam war. Small boats crammed with Vietnamese refugees were often attacked, with the women raped, the men killed or at least robbed.

Don't worry too much, in a few decades from now, the majority of Somalis will likely be in Denmark. We already have a couple of streets in Central Copenhagen nicknamed Little Mogadishu. Don't know if they're pirates though, not many Danes go there to check; seems to be the way both sides want it.

It was on its way from Egypt to Kenya.

@Zkrib: What "Law of Nations" were they refering too?
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Now days it is Indonesians who are the big pirates in southeast Asia.

Put a Phalanx 20mm autocannon on each side of the ship. cover it with a tarp so that it looks like a rescue boat. When a boat load of Bluebeard wannabes approaches the tarp comes off and a single half second burst vaporizes the whole lot of them.

I don't believe they were cruising off the coast of somalia. In fact, they were 160km off somalia when they were attacked. The Captain said that the attackers may have been connected to a nearby cargo ship. He said it was unlikely the men who attacked the Seabourn Spirit could have made it so far off shore in their small boats.

Besides, i believe the cruise ships was heading for kenya through the suez canal not going to or near somalia.

and water'd heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?

the northern bits of Somalia are the ones were you got some law & order (with somaliland being a semi-independent state). The attack took place in the southern waters.
AFAIK, that title goes to the northern coast of Somalia, aka Gulf of Aden.
I'm not trying to play with you or anything, I'm just curious if you have any knowledge about this subject other than "well somaliland is more stable than other Somalia" within you. If yes, willing to share?
