I think it's more than a little underhanded too. A good portion of the democratic senators supported this war, so the only escape hatch for them is to insinuate that they were lied to.

The intelligence was manipulated and since 2003 Democrats have been trying to get an investigation into what went wrong and who changed what but the Republicans have obstructed it at every turn. Reid used one of the only tools he had to force the start of an investigation.

A truly brilliant strategy without consequence but as always when it comes to Demonrats not an original one. Methinks the Democratic leadership and Senator Blutarski took their cue from the movie.

I envision the strategy session going something like this:

Otter: Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons. But that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.

Considering the "Phase 2" of the investigation has been in the works since progress since May, I'm going to have to go with the stunt theory here. Seeing as how it seems like it would be hard to force the start of an investigation already in progress.

By the way, this "investigation" has been in progress for over 22 months, both parties agreed to disclose the results and absolutley nothing has happened.

So yes they did use a tool they felt like they were forced to use to get ALREADY PROMISED results.


By the way I heard a nice quote today from Cheney either from last year or the year before, in which he flat out claimed that the US was in possesion of several "mobile weapons labs," and convinced this was proof of Iraq's chemical weapons program. I have never seen a bigger liar in politics.
