  • I've been called to serve by the Swiss Army!

Yep, I got a letter a few days ago where they asked me to go to their recruting bureau (failure to do so results in arrest.) I went there and attempted to explain why I can't, but they wouldn't hear it, and now theres an information session I must attend in January (failure to attend similarly results in arrest) where I must again try to explain why I can't do it. If they don't accept it, I'll start serving in March 2006.
Plus, if I want to leave the country, from now on I must get the militaries permission if I am leaving for more than 12 months, even if I don't serve this year.

            I can't remember... are you a dual US/Swiss citizen?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

              Why can't you?

                yeah im dual US/Swiss.

well, technically I CAN, but I dont want to because I'm here studying abroad for a year, and that would cramp my style if i had to. I wouldnt be able to do second semester, and then I'd fall behind.

                  Born to Kill
One of the older constitutions I think (either 1848, or 1874) had an Article that stated that "all swiss males are born a soldier". Art. 58 of the new one says that all male swiss must serve ( they toned it down, damn liberals.)

I tried to tell them that at their office, but there were like 'naaahh', first you do to the information day, and then you explain what your condition is, and then maybe we will let you do it again (you must do it before your 27th birthday, they prefer for you to do it when youre 20, or so, because otherwise people tend to go off and live somewhere else when they have a license or a diploma.)
the thing is, being a student does not automatically exempt you from military service.
the good news is that there will be woman serving. (they can serve in any competance as along as they pass the same physical test.) the bad news is there wont be any play because 1) its volontary for them which means 2) they're ****s.

There were Swiss soldiers in Kosovo when I was serving there, not to many but still they looked like decent soldiers. conscription sucks.

Why didn't you just give up your Swiss citizenship? Surely you knew this was going to happen.
