  • To compress or not to compress? That is the question.

Specifically, I am talking about under My Computer -> Local Disk ( C: ) -> Properties where it says "Disk Cleanup"...

I have already deleted all my Temporary Files (over 2 gig worth )...

but if I compress, I can get an extra 34 gig !!!!

but there has to be a catch right?

you don't just click on something and get 34 gig on your hard drive...

I looked under the options for "Compress old files" and it says I can choose to compress only files older than x number of days.

But I have a question for the more knowledgeable Poly tubies.

Is there any sort of performance penalty I will notice if I Compress my old files? Will accessing files on my hard drive take longer? Will loading programs or games take longer?

The reason I'm asking is that I am running low on hard drive space. Well, sort of. I just like to have a lot free.

I have two hard drives, one 250GB and one 160GB. Both are partitioned into single drives.

My main drive (250) is where I have my OS and my games and stuff. Also, it is where I download most stuff. It has about 35 GB free (after some house cleaning)

I use my other drive mainly for movies and TV shows. It has about 55GB free.

I have about 80GB of pr0n on the main drive that I need to go through. I suspect I will back up about a third of it onto DVD's and delete some of it. So that will free up some space. But I have deleted most of the games I don't play. I also have about 20gig of stuff on my desktop that I have been too lazy to burn (new games).

So other than that, the only other option is this 34 gig for "Compress old files"?

What do you guys think? What is the word on this "Compress old files" business?

    thanks

well a lot of it I can back up onto DVD's... that is no problem... like the movies, TV shows and pr0n...

teh TV shows I will prolly back up... after I have watched most of the shows once, I don't usually want to watch them again for a while, but might want to keep them around for collection (LIKE ALL THE STAR TREK TNG, DS9, AND VOY EPISODES EVER MADE also seasons 1 and 2 of Rescue Me, HBO's Rome, 2 Band of Brothers episodes, some of NCIS season 3, about 7 of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart's from september, the first 7 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (old school, not the new ones), Over There, and Real Time with Bill Maher)

then I will probably move teh pr0n I want to access on to the other harddrive and that will free up lots of space on C: (the 250GB)

but still, if Compressing files would still save even more space and not hurt performance, I might be interested in it...

        My C: is 40gb, my D: is 120gb, my G: is 120gb, and my H: is 320gb

Cleaning up (deleting files off) your hard drive(s) is overrated.

Jesus. I've only used about 50 of my 150 gigs... and that's with my little brothers' stuff as well.

One day, probably around the same time you discover hairs in your bathrooms, you'll also discover girls. Then like Sava, you will acquire 80gb of porn.

compression will slow access of those files because you have to go through the time to uncompress them before you can use them again. Also, I am guessing that your porn is mostly images and movies. Pictures, music, and movies are already compressed. Trying to compress these files again will not help you.

                  In Greek (overpriced) prices

One 4.7 GB DVD costs 50 eurocents
One 300 GB HD costs 155 euros

You can backup 300GB of data in 60-65 DVDs for 30something euros, 1/5 of the cost of a new HD.

If most of your stuff is movies, don't buy a HD.

Personally, I like to keep programs and games on CDs. CDs are also good for mp3s, since I have 2-3 devices that can play them (and I don't have a portable mp3 player).

You can probably get an 80GB HDD for 10 euros or something. The big ones are much more expensive because they are new. You know, like the fastest AMD 64.

Here if you buy the bulk packs the el cheapo no-name brand CD-RW discs are like .50 euro. If you buy brand name ones in nice plastic boxes they are about four times as much.

the cheapest I can get the brand of writable DVD media that I like is $15 for a pack of 50

                          I get HP DVD+R 8x

I don't think I can get a new HD... all my IDE slots are used up... I have two used up for HD's and two used up for disc drives... one is a 56x cd-rom and one is a 16x DVD burner/40xCDburner... and I don't think I have a free PCI slot to get one of those IDE pci-slot add on cards...

I do have a RAID IDE slot, but I don't think my mobo allows to use it for new hardware... only for RAID...

hmmm... so compressing slows access to files...

                          dammit...

there is never an easy solution...

maybe I will buy a 300 GB hard drive...

wow, Global Computer has one for $90 after rebate

                          but it expires tomorrow

I'll wait until next month to see their deals...

wow this one is good, 7200 RPM, 16MB cache, ATA-133
