  • What happens in your country.....

....when you (try to) go by bus, subway, cityrail or similar means of public mass transportation without a ticket?

Or how do they (try to) prevent this?

Do you have to show your ticket, for example when entering a bus, to the driver?

Are there technical means to make sure people buy tickets (for example mechanical doors at entrances that only open when you buy a ticket or so)?

Or is there personnel going around controlling people's tickets (randomly or regularly)?

And what if someone has no ticket? Fines? Police?

    Please enlighten me

I'm white (of diminished Irish decent however) so I never get punished in my home country for anything. Because of my WASP check of domination and oppression I get every two weeks I can afford a far better mode of transportation.

Seriously though. Most places I've been you go through turnstiles or something before getting to the boarding area. I rode more trains in Italy than I have ever here at home. I seem to remember a guy checking tickets but that was years ago

If you try to ride the commuter rail (MetroNorth) without a ticket, you may get away with it for a stop, maybe two, but the conductors come around checking tickets and if you don't have one, you're off the train @ the next stop... not sure if they bother pressing any sort of charges/fines.

In buses the driver checks at entrance.

In subway and metro there are free entry/exit, so no check there.

Though, in both buses and rails controllants occationlly take a round and check if you have the correct tickets.

Wrong ticket in bus gives a control fee approx 70 euro and approx 140 euro on trains.

In buses the driver checks at entrance.

ON the LRT, its free in the downtown but outside the free fare zone, they supposedly do random checks but I have never seen it. I think they would have a small riot if they delayed a packed commuter train for the time it would take for everyone to dig out their pass/ ticket.

Some super popular stops might have someone checking before you get on ( I saw them checking folks at the Saddledome once)

They threaten fines if you are caught

There isn't any public transit of note where I live in the USA.

AFAIK, they sue you here if they catch you mutiple times in a certain time frame.

But normally you just have to pay a fine. If you have a ticket that is valid for a longer time (month, year, semester) but you forget it while still being within that time, the fine is reduced dramatically if you show it within the next some days at their customer center (happened to me recently )

This goes mainly for subway and cityrail where they make random controls, in busses you have to show the ticket at the entrance too.

Buses - you go up through the front door and exit by the back one. The driver makes sure you pay or else.

Subway - turnstiles and other mechanisms at all entrances and exits to a diiffent section in each station. You must pay before you can enter.

                    Train - same thing

                    Light rail - same thing

Minibus - Driver watches you like a hawk to make sure you pay

As for Russia, in bus, you have to buy your ticket from the conductor or driver in case of jitney (a bus that has less than 15 seats).

Are there technical means to make sure people buy tickets (for example mechanical doors at entrances that only open when you buy a ticket or so)?
Sure if you mean a subway. You can't eneter a subway if you didn't drop your dime.
Well, some youngsters could, but they have to posses some experience how to cheat the machine I've cheated Moscow subway tourniquets when I was 11-14 years old more that once.

Or is there personnel going around controlling people's tickets (randomly or regularly)?
Yes, regularly in buses, never in subways (by regularly I meant they do check tickets sometimes. Last time I saw such situation it was something like eight or ten years ago. On the other hand I travel via bus pretty rarely. We can't drive car here when we are drunk unfortunately. It's a totalitarian state after all).
And what if someone has no ticket? Fines? Police?
                      Both.

                      Please enlighten me
Since you don't live in the totalitarian state like Russia, you shouldn't worry about such things. I believe authorities of your state buy a bouquet for any person who travels without a ticket.

We have only two modes of transportation - busses and trains.

In busses: you pay whilst going near the driver - or you show them your pass. checks of tickets in the back of the bus are very rare. And I don't think they actually do anything to you - but I am not sure - it depends on the mood of the driver - who gets slapped with a fine if a controller finds freeloaders.

In trains: you pass through turnstiles, whilst being watched by railways security. A controller passes on approx. 60% of all trains, in my experience, and you get slapped with a fine that is a multiplier of the cost of the ride. The only freeloading that happens, and quite a lot, is by soldiers who use their free rides on non-army related trips, but if you ask me, it's just another small compensation for slaving there.

You see, my city anticipated these complex and difficult to solve problems, and opted to just not have mass transit period.

I've never seen it done at rush hour but it's happened quite a few times on off-peak hours...which is retarded, as most of the riders are students with a U-Pass or something similar.

They do check at the Saddledome after concerts, Flames games, etc. though, before you get on.
