I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Yeah, it MUST be about Iraq. It MUST.
Actually, Iraq is the single biggest issue by far in his unpopularity. Every poll worth a damn has shown this, for the past YEAR.

The reason why the poll has Bush vs. Generic Dem is because that's how the '06 House campaigns will largely shape out (except possibly in the reddest of districts).

Then again, it's more likely just the LBURL media that's out to get Dear Leader.

In the past when house elections were "nationalized" it was largely cause of stuff happening in the House. in 1994 Gingrich ran against the Dem House leadership, not against Clinton so much. The Delay thing will hurt the House GOP.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I understand that Newt ran in large part against Clinton's problems - gays in the military, Hillarycare, etc. The ethics problems of the House Dem leadership were important as well (hence the Contract W/ America), but not everything.

Gays in the military had no traction, IIRC. and individual reps could defend their own stand on healthcare, fine tuned for local concerns - thats why House races ARE so local. Of course if some had taken positions on healthcare that had been made to seem radical in the course of the debate, they may have been hurt by that - but that had to do with their own positions in the House, NOT with Clintons popularity numbers, I think. The biggest issue that nationalized the election, more than most House elections were the scandals.

Well, it made Drake do some free advertising for CNN, so it can't have been completely useless.

Well there are some new issues that have come out recently that have damaged Bush. He raised alot of anger with the handling of Hurricane Katrina and we have seen revealed the extent to which Bush practices cronyism- and it's awful consequences with Katrina. He has also been hurt quite a bit by the Miers nomination. Bush won the votes of alot of traditional supporters of the Democratic party over values issues, and alot of those people are angry over the nomination of Miers.

Also keep in mind generic Democrats typically do better then actual Democrats. If you looked during the primaries when the different possible candidate were tested against Bush, "Un-Named Democrat" always did better then any actual Democrats- mainly because generic democrats don't have the negatives attached to them that real democrats do.

Speaking of stories that will get people's number...

US Senate 'finds Iraq oil cash in Galloway's wife's bank account'
From James Bone in New York and David Charter in Washington

GEORGE GALLOWAY faces possible criminal charges after a US Senate investigation tracked $150,000 (£85,000) in Iraqi oil money to his wife's bank account in Jordan.
The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations will refer the Respect Party MP for possible prosecution after concluding that he gave 'false and misleading testimony' at his appearance before the panel in May.

The sub-committee claimed that, through intermediaries, Mr Galloway and the Mariam Appeal were granted eight allocations of Iraqi crude oil totalling 23 million barrels from 1999 to 2003.

It will also forward the new information to British authorities, saying it raised questions about Mr Galloway's financial disclosure and the payment of illegal kickbacks to Iraq. "We have what we would call the smoking gun," said Senator Norm Coleman, the sub-committee's Republican chairman.

The sub-committee's report, released today, was provoked by Mr Galloway's clash with the senators, which he turned into a book entitled Mr Galloway goes to Washington. In that encounter, the anti-war MP vehemently denied receiving oil allocations from Iraq.

But the report provides bank account details tracking payments from an oil company through a Jordanian middleman to Mr Galloway's nowestranged wife, Amineh Abu- Zayyad, and his Mariam Appeal fund.

"Galloway was anything but straight with the Congress. He was anything but straight with the American people. There was a lot of bombast. There was a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing," Senator Coleman said. "We take very seriously the importance of testifying honestly before this committee . . ." he said. "We will forward matters relating to Galloway's false and misleading statements to the proper authorities here and in Great Britain."

A Senate aide said that Mr Galloway would be referred to the Justice Department for investigation of possible perjury, false statement and obstruction of a congressional proceeding - all Class A-felonies carrying a sentence of up to five years and a $250,000 fine.

This isn't really news either, as every non-****** already knew Galloway was a crook and a supporter of tyrants. Still good to see, though.

"Sen. Coleman personally sent Galloway a letter requesting an interview, and offered to fly staff to London in order to conduct the interview. Mr. Galloway declined both offers, and instead, offered to respond to written questions. Galloway denied any involvement whatsoever in any Oil-for-Food transaction in his written responses. "

Galloway has been going on about wanting to go back to America to rebutt the new charges (should they be made) for a while now....
