Interestingly enough some of the Galapogos penguins will swim far out to sea to hunt and have been sighted north of the Equator though they all nest in the southern Hemisphere. wikipedia also says that they've found 40 million year old fossils of a 3 meter tall uberpenguin.

The Great Auk was a realitive of the penguin which lived in Scandinavia, the British Isles, Iceland, Greenland, and northeastern North America. They grew up to 2.5 feet tall and they lived much like penguins lived. The were extensively hunted for their soft feathers (and likely because the flightless bird was easy to catch) and was eventually hunted to extinction.
