Sucks. Hopefully the band can survive this.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Helsingin Sanomat getting it all wrong again. Nightwish is not Power Metal. how can countrys biggest news paper have so many mistakes as HS do? I never read HS.

Sir Og: NW was going to have 2 year vacation anyway, so there never was a chance of NW being in Bulgaria next summer.

no. there are lots of good bands comming from finnland nowadays. and no, I don't speak of HIM or Rasmus.

One thing that bothers me about Finnish export bands is the often poor quality of the lyrics which results from their having to sing in English, songs with a lot of embarrassing grammatical and stylistic errors might still be accepted in central Europe but thinking about people in Anglo-Saxon countries hearing some of this stuff makes me feel ashamed.
Aivo: it was Tarja who the band into this mess, not Holopainen. and poor lyrics is not the case with NW.

I didn't mean Holopainen caused this but rather that I hope that he will get the band OUT of this situation. I wasn't being ironic... Or maybe I was, but not in the way you understood it. Clearly Holopainen has always been the driving force behind the band.

I have no idea where the English HS got the "Power Metal" part from, in the printed version they didn't claim Nightwish did Power Metal.

I read this in a Bulgarian online rock magazine. But unfortunately it doesn't really matter now.

I see nothing terribly wrong with calling Nightwish power metal. Their sound has been moving away from power metal since Century Child, but their albums before that were firmly a part of that genre. The fact that they added symphonic elements and a soprano on vocals doesn't change that, and I would still, if asked to describe them with a simple genre designation, call them power metal.

The subclassifications of metal are enough to drive a grown man to sobbing dissolution.

Are there any candidates for Turunen's replacement being mentioned?
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

no. I think Holopainen hopes that Tarja comes back to her senses.
yellow papers have dozens of suggestions starting from local Idols-canditates and ending to real metal singers.

Namaste: have you heard Angels Fall First? that's not power metal. Holopainen himself describes NW's music as heavy metal with opera singing.

to me, power metal is italian macho men playing poorly written songs. Nightwish is not that.

Yes, I actually have all of their albums except 'Once' because I lost patience with the quality decline. The songs in Angels Fall First aren't stereotypical 'happy-metal' power metal for certain, but they're still essentially power metal, and that is the sound they developed into their most definitive albums.

A lot of people try to distance themselves from power metal. Laiho in Children of Bodom does it too, though far more hilariously. It's because the genre has those negative associations that you noted; "italian macho men playing poorly written songs" <---do I hear Rhapsody?

But the truth is, that's just a definition for bad power metal.

Power Metal itself is just the branch off of Speed Metal that follows closer to the traditional style of heavy metal, just generally more epic and with more double bass and fairly slow chord progressions. Nightwish fit pretty well within that category.

I do hope they won't rejoin.
There was so much talk about the band being a lifestyle (good for the guys) and not about money (as it had apereantly become for Tarja) that if they were to rejoin one could only think (the break was very rude) it was done for the money...

So let's hope both can survive on their own.
